Distorting the Meaning of Shariah

by Dr. Robert D. Crane

The tsunami of Islamophobia continues to roll in.  The article by Frosty Woolridge, “America Must Never Succumb to Islam’s Shariah Law,” in today’s NewswithViews.com is perhaps the clearest distortion yet of Islamic law.  He supports Congressman Tancredo’s “Jihad Prevention Act ... which would deny U.S. visas to advocates of ‘Shari’a’ law and expel Islamists already here.”

Tancredo, who a year ago gained notoriety by calling for the bombing of Mecca, wants to require the INS to expel from America anyone who supports the shari’ah.  I would agree that anyone who supports the shari’ah as he defines it should never be allowed to enter America.  Muslim citizens of America who support beheadings, female genital mutilation, the stoning of women, and forced arranged marriages should not be deported, but should be given lengthy prison sentences for committing any of these crimes and denied all citizenship rights.

Actually I doubt that there are any American Muslim citizens who are guilty of committing or supporting any of these un-Islamic acts.  In England and Europe, however, the same may not be true.  These countries should immediately deport all Muslim religious leaders who oppose the civil law of these countries and imprison every Muslim who actually has committed the crimes that Tancredo bizarrely ascribes to Islam.

And then Congressman Tancredo should be sent to Guantanamo for supporting and inciting terrorism.
