Washington Times Publishes ILDC Director’s Response to Gaffney’s Incitements Against ISNA

(Plainfield, IN - September 19, 2005). Washington Times published ILDC director’s response to two articles appeared earlier in the same newspaper, in which their authors criticized Karen Hughes for visiting ISNA convention 2005 and meeting with American Muslim leaders.

Frank Gaffney, President of the Center for Security Studies and Washington Times regular writers, urged Ms. Hughes, in an article published on August 31, not to attend ISNA convention, and accused ISNA of supporting terrorism. His mean-spirited sentiments and unfair characterization of ISNA was repeated the next day in an op-ed article by Joel Mowbray, another Muslim basher and regular Washington Times writer.

Dr. Safi’s response appeared in the September 18 issue of Washington Time’s under the title “All Faiths Must Faith their Demons.” Dr. Safi pointed out the recklessness displayed by the two neocon pundits in making their baseless accusations.

About a dozen online and print publications carried Dr. Safi’s article in addition to the Washington Times. Apart from adding the title “Mr.” to Gaffney’s and Mowbray names (and on one occasion the title “Mrs.” was mistakenly used to refer to Mowbray), and dropping the main title of the article “Neocon Pundits Malign American Muslims,” the article was published intact.
