The Radicalization of America: Has It Just Begun?

by Dr. Robert D. Crane

The U.S. intelligence community now forecasts that a weapon of mass destruction probably will be used in America during the next five years.  This might even be the equivalent of a home-grown bacteriological super-Mumbai.  Both of these possibilities are probably improbable, and would be not nearly as dangerous as the total loss of confidence by the American people in their government.

A new genre of counter-cultural articles is now appearing in the blogosphere that suggests the beginning of a radical shift from almost bored opposition to the Bush regime toward an enflamed hatred of its successor.  Most notable is the resurrection of the epithet “New World Order”, with all of its baggage, applied to President Barack Obama’s new Administration.

Representative of the new radicalism is the article, “A Historic Moment: The Election of the Greatest Con-Man in Recent History,” by James Petras in http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article21415.htm, published on December 8, 2008.  The attacks in this article on perceptive people like Secretary Gates are vastly overdrawn and even ignorant, but perception is what counts in politics.  Further development of such a psychological turnaround could result in mass demonstrations of millions of people in Washington, perhaps as early as April 15th, 2009.  The Vietnam War provoked similar demonstrations during the early Nixon Administration, but this time the agenda of attack may broaden to encompass the entire financial system as the root cause of what tens of millions of people perceive to be the destruction of all civilized life on earth.

This, in turn, could lead to the disintegration of both major political parties in America if they continue to pursue the same failed and popularly rejected policies of the Bush Administration, despite election competition in calling for “change.”  This might be beneficial if it could lead to the real changes of the Just Third Way from within an orderly political process, as advocated by the American Revolutionary Party, but it would be bad if it would lead America toward the status of a failed state at the heart of a failed world.

The first hundred days of President Barack Obama’s testing and trial, ending shortly after April 15th,  may determine the outcome of the 2012 election.  If expectations are not met or met only with more words, we might not like what we see, because, as in love, a woman spurned (the electorate) is an undying enemy earned.

We do need a new world order, but one based not on the pursuit of oppressive power to counter chaos but on the liberating devolution of both economic and political power in pursuit of justice.
