U.S. Army Presentation Defames Evangelicals, Catholics, Sunni Muslims, & Ultra Orthodox Jews

Pamela Geller published US Army Labeled Evangelicals, Catholics as Examples of Religious Extremism in which she introduces an article with the comments: “Essentially Obama’s DoD is equating Mother Theresa with Sheik Qaradawi. It’s crazy time in America, folks. The bottom line devout is that Christians and Jews are not slaughtering in the name of Christ or Hashem. This is madness. What’s next? The Pope’s face on a wanted poster? I don’t know where the US army is headed with this, but it ain’t good. Truth is the recognition of reality. And these fantasists are in the thrall of one mass circle jerk.”
The article that set this off was from Todd Starnes at Fox News US Army Labeled Evangelicals, Catholics as Examples of Religious Extremism. Starnes said:
The U.S. Army listed Evangelical Christianity and Catholicism as examples of religious extremism along with Al Qaeda and Hamas during a briefing with an Army Reserve unit based in Pennsylvania, Fox News has learned.
“We find this offensive to have Evangelical Christians and the Catholic Church to be listed among known terrorist groups,” said Ron Crews, executive director of the Chaplain Alliance for Religious Liberty. “It is dishonorable for any U.S. military entity to allow this type of wrongheaded characterization.”
The incident occurred during an Army Reserve Equal Opportunity training brief on extremism. Topping the list is Evangelical Christianity. Other organizations listed included Catholicism, Al Qaeda, Hamas, the Ku Klux Klan, Sunni Muslims, and Nation of Islam.
Starnes, Geller, and the other sites that picked this up include this photograph at the top of the page as PROOF of this claim 
They are correct that there is a problem, however the full photograph of the slide in question tells a slightly different story 
There appears to still be a problem within the U.S. military and law enforcement agencies with providing training on issues involving extremism, terrorism, and religion. The problem is that the trainers are often not qualified, and their materials are not scrutinized and evaluated by actual experts before they are presented.
What was written at the bottom of this slide makes sense. Extremism is a complex phenomenon - religious extremism is not limited to any single religion, ethnic group, or region of the world. However, if that is the point the presenter/trainer was attempting to make, the slide itself certainly did not illustrate that point. Instead, it is a confusing jumble of contradictory entries that seem biased against religion in general.
Some groups listed are actual extremist and even terrorist groups that claim affiliation with a particular religion. For example, Al Qaeda, Christian Identity, Kahane Movement, Hamas, Hutaree, Jewish Defense League, Ku Klux Klan. If these actual extremist groups (and many others that might have been included) followed by the religion that they claim would be reasonable.
However, listing Evangelical Christians, Catholicism, Sunni Islam, and Ultra Orthodox Judaism - which are mainstream religious groups - as if all members of these relisions are extremists, is absolutely bigoted and irresponsible. It is one thing to say that Christianity, Judaism, Islam, or any other religious group has within its ranks some extremists, but to say (or imply) that all members of these religious groups are extremists is simply wrong.
I agree that this presentation is fatally flawed, and that the military needs to do much more to improve its training programs. I am puzzled, however as to why it is that all of the articles that have been written on this presentation are only concerned about the misrepresentation of Evangelicals and Catholics.
Geller’s partner in the hate groups AFDI/SIOA, Robert Spencer, instead of sticking with what would be a reasonable proposition - that all such biased training material is problematic, and that there need to be guidelines developed that will not allow such things to happen again - uses this as another Muslim bashing opportunity. He is upset that Muslims complained when Islam was the target of such biased presentations and the government agreed to review their guidelines on both the qualifications for trainers, and the content of materials, and to remove incorrect, biased materials. Spencer finds that unreasonable on the part of Muslims, and proof of some sort of conspiracy on the part of the government - and he says:
“And now we see what the Obama administration has replaced that material with. The implications of the U.S. Army’s “Religious Extremism” list are quite ominous. Evangelical Christianity, Catholicism and “Islamophobia” are forms of “Religious Extremism” on par with al-Qaeda and Hamas? Then how long will it be before the Obama administration goes to war against them, as it has repeatedly declared that it is at war with al-Qaeda? Note also: Obama has repeated many, many times that we are not at war with Islam, and the mainstream media line is that to suggest otherwise would be evidence of “hatred” and “bigotry.” But apparently it is not “hatred” and “bigotry” for the U.S. to declare that Catholicism is the same sort of thing as al-Qaeda. Now, the list does include “Sunni Muslims,” but specifies those in Iraq — we already know that there is no possible way that the Obama administrations means to classify all Sunni Muslims as “extremists.”
Spencer is correct that this training class used seriously defective materials, and that this particular “religious extremism” list is insulting, hateful, and bigoted. He is correct that continued use of such materials would be “quite ominous”. However, the reality is that this is simply the most recent manifestation of biased training materials. This particular presentation uses a slide that is hateful towards Evangelical Christians, Catholics, Sunni Muslims, and Ultra Orthodox Jews.
It is equally inappropriate to defame any religion.
The slide presentation prompted a protest from the Archdiocese for the Military Services:
“The Archdiocese is astounded that Catholics were listed alongside groups that are, by their very mission and nature, violent and extremist. According to an investigation and reply from the Army Chief of Chaplains office, the training in question appears to have been an isolated incident not condoned by the Department of the Army. The Archdiocese and the Chaplain Alliance explained that the Army can and should take steps to prevent such incidents in the future. The Archdiocese calls upon the Department of Defense to review these materials and to ensure that taxpayer funds are never again used to present blatantly anti-religious material to the men and women in uniform.”
As a Muslim, I absolutely agree with this statement by the Archdiocese. As a Muslim and as an American, I am appalled that any religion would be the target of such a bigoted training. As a Muslim and as an American, I am pleased that it was an isolated incident, and also hope that steps are taken to prevent such incidents in the future. As a Muslim and as an American, I stand with any religion that is being defamed, and protest against such defamation. As a member of a community that has experienced how painful such false generalizations and misrepresentations can be, I don’t want to see any community go through this.
An apology is owed to all of the communities who were defamed by this presentation.
