AFDI/SIOA/SIOE/SION/EDL/BF Global Alliance Event 9/11/2012
by Sheila Musaji
On September 11th, 2012, the AFDI/SIOA/SIOE/SION/EDL/BF Global Alliance held what they called variously - an AFDI Freedom of Speech Congress - an International Freedom Defense Congress, etc. in New York City. This event was a follow up to their much vaunted AFDI/SIOA/SIOE/SION/EDL/BF Global Alliance Rally in Stockholm. The article AFDI/SIOA/SIOE/SION/EDL/BF Global Alliance Rally in Stockholm Fizzles outlined the background of the formation and efforts of these hate groups and included their announcement of the New York gathering. Here is that article which provides important background to the current event:
In our TAM article AFDI/SIOA/SIOE/SION/EDL - If At First You Don’t Succeed Add Another Acronym we discussed the planned gathering of anti-Muslim hate groups in Stockholm planned for today. That article also includes background on the individuals and organizations involved.
Pamela Geller had posted an announcement about this gathering Worldwide Counter-Jihad Alliance to Launch with Stockholm Demonstration on August 4 back in June.
According to their SION press release
The first worldwide counter-jihad initiative will begin August 4 with the First Annual Global Counter Jihad rally in Stockholm, Sweden. Representatives from Stop Islamization of Nations (SION), Stop Islamization of America (SIOA), Stop Islamisation of Europe (SIOE), the English Defence League (EDL), and allied groups will speak.
The Global Counter Jihad rally will feature the president of SION and executive director of SIOA, Pamela Geller, as well as SION Vice President and SIOA associate director Robert Spencer. Also speaking will be the EDL’s Tommy Robinson, SIOE’s Anders Gravers, and other worldwide leaders from official Stop Islamization and Defence League groups
“The conference,” said Geller in a statement, “heralds the launch of a worldwide counter jihad alliance. Freedom fighters from Europe and America, as well as India, Israel, and other areas threatened by jihad, will at last be working together and forming a common defense of freedom and human rights.”
In January of this year, we reported on SIOA’s first announcement of the formation of this new coalition, SION: Hate Groups Unite to Form an International Hate Coalition. When that big announcement was made six months ago about the formation of SION, the groups included were: Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) and Stop Islamisation of Europe (SIOE). The announcement of this “new” coalition includes the groups: Stop Islamization of Nations (SION), Stop Islamization of America (SIOA), Stop Islamisation of Europe (SIOE), the English Defence League (EDL), and allied groups. There is nothing new here except that the EDL is now included as well as “allied groups”. It will be fascinating to see who these shadowy groups are.
It appears they are attempting to re-brand themselves and align together “globally”. In the article SION: Hate Groups Unite to Form an International Hate Coalition that I published in January, I noted that:
David Duke attempted to re-image the KKK as a “moderate” group who are simply proud of their race. Duke attempted to tone down his rhetoric and present the KKK using positive terms. Duke, and a number of other Klan leaders, denied being racist, but expressed concern about whites being in danger of losing their culture from an onslaught of Blacks and non-European immigrants. They said things like Our land is once again being destroyed by the same treason. This time it is not only confined to the South, but it is affecting the nation as a whole and “we don’t hate blacks, we just love whites”. They presented themselves as “pro-white” rather than anti-Black and anti-Semitic. They claimed that their “movement” was necessary to combat “anti-white and anti-Christian propaganda” and “to promote “White Christian civilization.”
Taking a page from this attempt to re-image hatred, a core group of Islamophobes is trying to camouflage their ideology by using and abusing terms like “freedom fighters”, “truth tellers”, and “patriots” to cover their extremism and hatred.
International hate groups have just announced that they are uniting in a global anti-Muslim coalition. Stop Islamization of America (SIOA) and Stop Islamisation of Europe (SIOE) are joining together in a coalition called Stop Islamization of Nations (SION).
These groups like the “new” Klan define themselves in positive terms. They say that they are dedicated to defending human rights, religious liberty, freedom of conscience and the freedom of speech against Islamic supremacist intimidation and attempts to bring elements of Sharia to the West. They call themselves a coalition of free people determined to stand for freedom and oppose the advance of Islamic law, Sharia.
In March of 2012, as Bob Pitt of Islamophobia Watch has noted in an article with much more information on this SION gathering — ” The last international protest organised by the EDL and its allies, in Aarhus in March, proved to be a bit of a humiliation, with the small group of “counterjihadists” heavily outnumbered by anti-fascist protestors. No doubt the EDL hopes that SION’s support for the Stockholm demonstration will pull in a few more people.”
The SIOA and the SIOE planned a big rally in July, 2011 but the French and European authorities denied them a permit to hold the rally. Geller claimed that this was a sign of the “collapse of democracy in Europe” and wrote a vicious article attacking the government for “capitulation to Islamic supremacists and violent radical Leftists” for cancelling a rally planned by their “human rights organizations”. Loonwatch discusses this at length and provides actual facts.
In September of 2009 SIOE co-sponsored an anti-Mosque program in Harrow with the EDL. An article by Tristan Kirk in the local Harrow Times noted that
LEADING members of Harrow’s Jewish community have joined together to condemn anti-Muslim campaigners who are planning a protest in the borough this weekend. Rabbis Aaron Goldstein, Hillel Athias-Robles, Kathleen Middleton, Frank Dabba Smith, and Michael Hilton have signed a letter offering unequivocal support for the borough’s Muslim community. ... The show of unity from the Jewish community is in defiance of a direct appeal by SIOE on its website for 1,000 Jews bearing the Israeli flag to turn up. However, the Rabbis hit out at SIOE’s “outrageous lies” which are “entirely without foundation” and accused the self-confessed islamaphobic organisation of spreading hatred and violence to divide the Harrow community.
The Harrow Council also backed the mosque against the protestors. And, the Community Security Trust (CST) also urged the Jewish community not to lend their support to this protest. They pointed out that SIOE has a history of racism and bigotry.
The past gatherings of this “global alliance of acronymns” have been big on impressive sounding adjectives, but fizzled out. This gathering which was billed as a — worldwide alliance, global gathering, world freedom conference, the world’s leading freedom action organizations joining forces, etc., also fizzled out.
The past few months, this “global gathering” was heavily advertized by those involved: Jihad Watch, Atlas Shrugs, European Freedom Initiative, SION, SIOA, SIOE, EDL, BF, Faith Freedom Int’l, Swedish Defense League, Finnish Defense League, Norwegian Defense League, Danish Defense League, Die Freiheit Bavaria, Q Society of Australia.
Confirmed speakers advertized for the event included: Robert Spencer, Pamela Geller, Tommy Robinson, Kevin Carroll, Anders Gravers, Richard Abrahamson, Mimosa Koiranen, Rune Hauge, Michael Sturzenberger, Pavel Chernev, Philip Traulsen, Debbie Robinson, Leo Baardsan, Paul Weston.
According to one press report all of that promotion by all of these organizations and their “allies” brought only about 100 supporters to their rally in Stockholm. At least 500 counter demonstrators showed up, and sadly some engaged in violence, attempting to break through police lines.
The bottom line is that even with all the advance advertizing, the pleas to attend, and to donate for “extra security”, 14% of those gathered were the speakers themselves. All of these individuals and organizations were only able to turn out 80 to 90 people from across the globe, and if the heavy media presence was also included in the total count, then that number is even lower.
At some point, they will realize that most decent people are fully aware of just how bigoted and hateful they are.
In September, the same organizations and individuals are planning another SION event in New York City. They plan to hold this spectacle on September 11th at the UN Plaza Millenium Hotel. At this point speakers are advertized to be Dr. Mordechai Kedar (SANE), Dr. Ashraf Rameleh, Cliff Kincaid (AIM), Anders Gravers (SIOE), Lars Hedegaard, Magdi Christiano Allam, Valentina Colombo, Paul Weston, Lars Vilks, and more ...
In another Geller article, the goals of this coalition are made crystal clear
The SION President’s Council’s next initiative will be the first session of the International Freedom Defense Congress, which will be held in New York on September 11, 2012. The principal focus of the Congress will be a media workshop pertaining to Islamic supremacist attempts to restrict the freedom of speech in the free world, and the smear campaigns against freedom fighters in newspapers and media institutions in the West.
The objective of this first-of-its-kind workshop is to develop media-related mechanisms to address the smear campaigns. It will also address the media’s double standard regarding Islam and other religions. The Congress will discuss at length the reasons behind and the
results of the Western media’s offensive campaigns against freedom of speech and the truth about Islam, jihad, Islamic supremacism and Muslims.
The International Freedom Defense Congress will represent a quantum leap in media action, as it discusses, beyond rhetoric, the practical steps to address the phenomenon of the Islamic war against free speech.
SION establishes a common American/European coalition of free people determined to stand for freedom and oppose the advance of Islamic law, Sharia. Islamic law is not simply a religious system, but a political system that encompasses every aspect of life; is authoritarian, discriminatory, and repressive; and contradicts Western laws and principles in numerous particulars. SION respects Muslims as fellow human beings and rejects Islamization as a comprehensive political, religious, cultural and social system of behavior and ideology.
At the International SION/SIOA/SIOE/EDL event in Stockholm, leaders of American and European hate groups met privately, and according to their own reports formed an International Activist Leadership Team to be called the SION President’s Council. The initial members of the President’s Council areSIOE’s Anders Gravers; Tommy Robinson and Kevin Carroll of the EDL; Debbie Robinson of the Q Society of Australia, Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller. The members of the newly formed council unanimously voted to elect Pamela Geller Council President. ... The President’s Council differs from the SION Board, which includesSwiss parliamentarian Oskar Freysinger; Cliff Kincaid of Accuracy in Media; Ashraf Rameleh of Voice of the Copts; Ali Sina of FaithFreedom.org; Wafa Sultan, Stefan Herre of Politically Incorrect in Germany; the Israeli author Dr. Mordechai Kedar; Babu Suseelan; and Anders Gravers of SIOEThis Board functions in an advisory capacity, while the President’s Council is a steering committee. It functions as a mobile, proactive, reactive on-the-ground team developing and executing confidential action plans that strike at the heart of the global anti-freedom agenda.
All of this means that the Islamophobia Industry is now organized internationally and preparing to increase the level of propaganda. They are now organized to carry out their strategy even more vociferously. Their strategy has already been studied and laid out in The People for the American Way PFAW report The Right Wing Playbook on Anti-Muslim Extremism which discusses eight strategies employed by anti-Muslim activists to cast doubt on the validity of Islam as a religion and the integrity of American Muslims in order to justify prejudice and illegal discrimination:
Framing American Muslims as dangerous to America; Twisting statistics and using fake research to “prove” the Muslim threat; Inventing the danger of “creeping Sharia”; Justifying taking away freedoms and liberties from Muslims in order to “defend liberty”; Denying the validity of Islam as a religion; Arguing that Muslims have no First Amendment rights under the Constitution; Linking anti-Muslim prejudice to anti-Obama rhetoric; Slandering progressives and non-Christians as unholy and anti-American.
According to Geller and Spencer in a pre-rally article Leftists planning disruptions, AFDI Freedom Congress security costs spiraling they are under threat of violence from mysterious leftists, Muslims, and other threats to freedom requiring their readers to please send money to cover the costs.
There was absolutely no information provided as to who these “leftists” were, or what sort of disruptions were being planned. Just an appeal to help them with their “spiraling” security costs. In fact, their appeal for contributions was pleading
Even if you can’t be there—and the event is sold out—you can help the cause by contributing. We are doing so much, so very much: the Islamorealism train ads in NY, the new bus campaign in San Francisco, the pro-Israel campaign in that same city, a pro-Israel new campaign in a new city, and this September 11th SION event, the cost of which far exceeded our expectations. We need to fight this war, and we can’t do it without you. Please.
In another pre-really article, Geller adds a little about this gathering “Freedom fighters from all over the globe, journalists, intellectuals and academicians will be among the participants in the workshop, which will consist of brainstorming sessions to develop mechanisms for cooperation with external partners, and to develop an action plan to address the phenomenon of the Islamic war against free speech.”
Her article also had this: The organisation noted that the workshop is of particular importance as it is the first ever to address the implications of Resolution 16/18 of the United Nations Human Rights Council, the stated goal of which is to “combat intolerance, negative stereotyping and stigmatisation [sic] of, discrimination, incitement to violence, and violence against persons based on religion or belief,” but which is actually designed to restrict truthful speech about Islamic supremacism and jihad, so as to render the West mute and defenseless before the advancing threat of jihad and Sharia. Resolution 16/18, which was adopted by the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva in March 2011, was backed by U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton at the most recent Istanbul Process Conference in Washington in December. This is widely viewed as a significant step toward furthering OIC efforts to destroy the freedom of speech and impose Sharia blasphemy laws on the free world.
If Geller had the ability to do a search, she would have discovered that they are certainly NOT the “first ever to address the implications of Resolution 16/18 of the United Nations Human Rights Council”.
In 2011 MPAC released a critique of this global blasphemy law. Here is the text of the MPAC press release at that time
(Washington, D.C.—12/23/2011) The Muslim Public Affairs Council today expresses its support for the passage of a historic UN resolution to combat ideologies of religious hatred through free expression instead of silencing expression through a global blasphemy law.
— UN Condemns Religious Intolerance, Drops ‘Defamation’ Line for First Time in Years (Reuters)
— U.N. Tackles Religious Intolerance without Limiting Free Speech (Human Rights First)
For the past 12 years, the Organization of the Islamic Conference had pushed for a resolution in the United Nations Human Rights Council called “Defamation of Religions” to be adopted into international human rights law. The stated purpose of the resolution was to fight religious discrimination and incitement to violence through a global blasphemy law. However the United Nations General Assembly recently voted to fight religious hatred with reference to “Defamation of Religions” or similar ideas.
“We are pleased to see the positive direction global leaders are taking in fighting religious hatred, the right way,” said MPAC Government and Policy Analyst, Alejandro Beutel. “Successfully combating discrimination can be done while respecting freedom of expression.”
MPAC is also releasing its new position paper, “No Compulsion in Religion: A Faith-Based Critique of the ‘Defamation of Religions’ Concept.” In our position paper, we oppose the misguided Defamation of Religions concept for two reasons:
It runs contrary to Islamic values promoting religious tolerance and a free, civil exchange of ideas
Second, evidence indicates anti-blasphemy laws actually encourages more violence rather than preventing it
Here is the introduction to the MPAC position paper discussed in that press release:
For the past 12 years, the Organization of the Islamic Conference had pushed for a resolution in the United Nations Human Rights Council called “Defamation of Religions” to be adopted into international human rights law. The stated purpose of the resolution was to fight religious discrimination and incitement to violence through a global blasphemy law.
In MPAC’s position paper, “No Compulsion in Religion” we oppose the misguided Defamation of Religions concept because for two main reasons. First, it runs contrary to Islamic teachings promoting religious tolerance and a free, civil exchange of ideas.
Second, it has not prevented the bigotry and violence it has sought to guard against. In fact, evidence in several countries shows the opposite – local blasphemy laws have provided a pretext for vigilante violence, and legitimated harassment and violence against people with different religious and political views.
“This paper argues against the Defamation of Religions (DoR) concept on both religious and practical policy grounds. Religiously, the DoR resolution runs contrary to Qur’anic verses that emphasize free speech and open civil debate.” (P. 1)
As always, with the Islamophobes they are really not interested in any of the causes they claim to represent, only in using those causes as a club to beat Muslims with.
As with many other past stunts meant to influence their base, it is a red herring. Just a few previous examples of this game of pretending that they are stepping in to right wrongs not being addressed by American Arabs or Muslims are: — The Former Muslims United Freedom Pledge Against Punishment for Apostasy issued a full two years after American Muslims had initiated a statement Apostasy and Freedom of Faith in Islam initially signed by 100 Islamic scholars and activists. When Muslims refused to sign their pledge, they were outraged. — Their [url=http://theamericanmuslim.org/tam.php/features/articles/jessica-mokdad-conference]Jessica Mokkdad Human Rights Conference[url] which was just another anti-Muslim/anti-Arab hatefest.
They are also unwilling to admit that the numbers attending their events are dwindling They also simply make up numbers about attendance. Here are just a few examples of inflating the numbers from previous events:
In 2010 Geller claimed that the AFDI/SIOA 9/11 anti-mosque rally had either 10,000 or tens of thousands, up to 40,000. According to the Huffington Post the numbers were about 1,500 attending Geller’s rally and about 2,000 rallying in opposition to her message According to CBS News, the count as 3,000 for Geller’s rally. There is a huge difference between estimates of 1500 to 3,000 and Geller’s 10,000 to 40,000 numbers.
Various news sites report that there were about 150 participants at Geller and Spencer’s Jessica Mokkdad human rights conference. It is surprising that since Geller claims that her conference was “sold out” and “standing room only”, the hall that they had reserved for such a well-advertised event could only hold 150 people. Omar Baddar and Omar Tewfiq of AAI reported that they were among those who were denied entrance to this conference. They reported that “Although Baddar and Tewfiq were not registered, they signed up with others at the registration table as press and waited for a possible opening. Others who came after them were allowed in, but they were not. Finally Baddar went up and asked why that was, and a security person tells him on the video that “you are on the do not enter list”. Baddar and Tewfiq discovered from hotel management that the room where the conference was held could accomodate 300 people, but Geller had it set up for 150.”
Their much publicized Stockholm rally was billed as a — worldwide alliance, global gathering, world freedom conference, the world’s leading freedom action organizations joining forces, etc.— fizzled out. All of the promotion by all of these organizations and their “allies” brought only between 100 and 200 supporters to their rally in Stockholm. At least 500 counter demonstrators showed up.
The latest gathering in New York has received almost no publicity in the mainstream press. Pamela Geller has posted an article claiming that it was “wildly successful” and a “standing room only crowd”, however a photograph she includes shows a relatively small room that looks like it could only hold about 100 people.
Aaron Labaree at Guernica Magazine, attended and reported on the Conference. He provides “A few choice words by Dr. Babu Suseelan, a Hindu activist in Pennsylvania:
“If we do not kill the bacteria,” the jowly Suseelan scolded the audience, “the bacteria will kill us.” Otherwise, he warned, “Muslims will breed like rats and they will be a majority.” Still, he concluded hopefully, “Islam can be stopped! And it can be wiped out.”
Spencer laughed, but Geller covered her face, as if witnessing the antics of a naughty child.
There is no way to understand this except as a call for genocide. And, covering your face with your hands or laughing, are not appropriate responses for individuals who claim not to hate Muslims.
Alex Kane reported that
The gathering brought together speakers from anti-Muslim movements around the globe, including Tommy Robinson of the English Defense League, a violent far-right group. David Yerushalmi, the racist Orthodox Jewish lawyer who has lived in an illegal Israeli settlement, was a speaker as well. And David Storobin, the Brooklyn state senator who created some buzz after being photographed in an Israeli army uniform, spoke to Geller’s conference too.
A British site that monitors the EDL, has reported that in the weeks prior to Robinson and Carrol attending the SION Conference, they were posting on the EDL site that they were flat broke and appealing for donations. They also have screen grabs of Robinson claiming in twitter posts that the SION event he was speaking at was at the UN (a blatant lie). He also tweeted that he sat next to New York State Senator David Storobin at the event. The article also notes that
... We are not sure who paid for this particular trip but amusingly, Tommy took to Twitter to claim that whilst there, we was awarded the little known ‘prestigious’ Oriana Fallaci Memorial Award. Fallaci was an Italian journalist and Islamophobe. The British Freedom Party were reporting the ‘prestigious’ award like it was a Nobel Peace Prize citing that there were human rights activists from all over the world present which we find a little strange considering one of the British Freedom Party’s main policies is to abolish the human rights act.
This leaves many questions unanswered. Who did pay for an expensive trip for the trio, considering they are claiming to be broke. ...
One of the members of the SION steering committee, Tommy Robinson aka Stephen Lennon has been arrested in Britain. Bob Pitt of Islamophobia Watch reports
The EDL members released on bail after being arrested on Saturday – apparently en route to the East London Mosque – didn’t include EDL leader Stephen Lennon, who has been remanded in prison on a charge of entering the United States illegally. This arises from his visit to New York last month to speak at the so-called International Freedom Defense Congress organised by Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer’s Stop Islamization of Nations (SION).
Tommy Robinson EDL @EDL Trobinson
Been arrested for fraud for flying to America for invitation to speak in New York on Sept 11th. Met police are a joke.
Richard Bartholomew reports that Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer Raise Funds for EDL Leader’s Legal Defence. Geller called Robinson’s arrest “darkness descending in England” and “sharia inspired victimisation!” and described Robinson as “part of our international team, members of SION’s President’s council, key players in the worldwide struggle for freedom.”
Bartholomew notes: “Up until the middle of last year, Geller and Spencer were wary of association with EDL; the alliance was finally cemented in June. Having invested so heavily in the organisation, they have no other option than to continue aggressively to assert a narrative of political persecution; but one wonders if privately they have reservations.”
Hope Not Hate also noted the fundraising and defense efforts of Geller and Spencer Time to ask Geller some tough questions?
And State Senator David Storobin (R-Sheepshead Bay) who attended this event and sat next to Tommy Robinson has been defeated in the elections. Perhaps, openly supporting bigotry is not the best campaign strategy.
Sky News reports that Robinson has been found guilty by a British court and sentenced to 10 months in prison.
... The court heard that he was previously jailed for assault in 2005 and also has previous convictions for drugs offences and public order offences.
Sentencing the 30-year-old, Judge Alistair McCreath, told him: “I am going to sentence you under the name of Stephen Lennon, although I suspect that is not actually your true name, in the sense that it is not the name that appears on your passport.
“What you did went absolutely to the heart of the immigration controls that the United States are entitled to have. “Had it been known in this country that you were proposing to leave under a false passport, you would not have been accepted on to the plane and you would not have been permitted to leave this country on a false passport. “It’s not in any sense trivial.”
Bob Pitt of Islamophobia Watch asks a pertinent question: “Is Geller asking us to believe she didn’t realise that her star guest, who as the Sky and BBC reports note had previously been barred from entering the US, could only have secured entry to the country by illegal means? Hopefully the US authorities will be investigating Geller’s role in this.”
Actually, the authorities should be investigating both Geller and Spencer’s role in this, as they both lead the organizations involved.
And, of course, Geller has already posted an article calling this “political imprisonment in the UK”. She says that “It is stunning that the UK has degenerated to such depths. Freedom is no longer a reality, but a defeated idea undone by cowardice and capitulation of Islamic thuggery and violence.” And that Robinson was “imprisoned for standing up for freedom and equality of rights under the law. I stand with Robinson.”
How exactly she thinks that this man being arrested and convicted for a serious passport violation has anything to do with Muslims is beyond any rational persons comprehension.
RESOURCES FOR DEALING WITH ISLAMOPHOBIA SUMMARY
The Islamophobia Industry exists and is engaged in an anti-Muslim Crusade. They have a manifesto for spreading their propaganda, and which states their goal of “destroying Islam — as a culture, a political ideology, and a religion.” They produce anti-Muslim films. They are forming new organizations and coalitions of organizations at a dizzying speed, not only nationally, but also internationally. They have formed an International Leadership Team “which will function as a mobile, proactive, reactive on-the-ground team developing and executing confidential action plans that strike at the heart of the global anti-freedom agenda.”
Currently, the Islamophobia Industry is engaged in a full-scale, coordinated, demonization campaign against American Muslims and Arabs. In just the past few months we have seen a series of inflammatory provocations: There was the Innocence of Muslims film Titanic, a German satire magazine plans an “Islam” cover article to be published later this month. Charlie Hebdo, a French satire magazine published an issue with inflammatory cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. Newsweek published their ‘Muslim Rage’ cover. Terry Jones held a “trial of Prophet Muhammad”. SION held a “global” gathering in NYC to plan propaganda strategy. A group in Toronto publicized a “walk your dog at the mosque” day. AFDI/SIOA has run a series of anti-Muslim ads on public transportation across the country. AFDI/SIOA are planning to run 8 more anti-Muslim ads. There are three more films on Prophet Muhammad in the works by Ali Sina, Mosab Hassan Yousef and Imran Farasat. They are even bringing their hate messages into public schools.
Daniel Pipes is encouraging publication of “A Muhammad cartoon a day”, and says “So, this is my plea to all Western editors and producers: Display the Muhammad cartoon daily, until the Islamists become accustomed to the fact that we turn sacred cows into hamburger.”. Pipes joins Daniel Greenfield (aka Sultan Knish) who published an appeal on David Horowitz’ Front Page Magazine Is It Time for ‘Make Your Own Mohammed Movie Month’?. And, both are following in the footsteps of such luminaries as Pamela Geller, who promoted just such a plan back in 2010 with her promotion of Draw Muhammad Day, even after the cartoonist who drew the first cartoon and suggested the idea, Molly Norris apologized to Muslims and asked for the day to be called off, and American Muslims had issued a defense of free speech. None of this is surprising as one of the Islamophobes laid out their strategy as “The Muslims themselves have shown us their most vulnerable spot, which is the questionable (though unquestioned) character of the ‘Prophet’ himself. We need to satirise and ridicule baby-bonking Mo until the Muslims fly into uncontrollable tantrums, then ridicule them even more for their tantrums, and repeat the process until they froth at the mouth and steam comes out of their ears.”
The Islamophobia of these folks is very real, it is also strikingly similar to a previous generations’ anti-Semitism, and it has predictable consequences. The reason that this is so obvious to so many is that rational people can tell the difference between legitimate concerns and bigoted stereotypes.
The claim that the Islamophobes are “truth-tellers” and “defenders of freedom” who actually “love Muslims” and have never engaged in “broadbrush demonization” or “advocated violence”, or that nothing that they say could have had anything to do with any act of violence, are nonsense. The claim that they are falsely being accused of Islamophobia for no reason other than their legitimate concerns about real issues and that in fact there is not even such a thing as Islamophobia, or their claim that the fact that there are fewer hate crimes against Muslims than against Jews or that some Muslims have fabricated such crimes “proves” that Islamophobia doesn’t exist, or that the term Islamophobia was made up by Muslims in order to stifle their freedom of speech, or that anti-Muslim bigotry is “not Islamophobia but Islamorealism” are all nonsense.
These individuals and organizations consistently promote the false what everyone “knows” lies about Islam and Muslims (including distorting the meaning of Qur’anic verses, and distorting the meaning of Islamic terms such as taqiyya, jihad, sharia, etc.).
The most commonly repeated false claims about Muslims and Islam are that:
Everyone “knows” that most or all terrorists are Muslims, and there are no Christian and no Jewish terrorists (or terrorists of any other religious stripe), and that Muslims are all militant, inherently violent, more likely to engage in violence against civilians, and more likely than other Americans to be radicalized.
Everyone “knows” that Muslims are not interested in dialogue. That Muslims don’t help Christians in need. That Muslims can’t have Christians as friends, and are anti-Semites, Holocaust deniers, and intolerant of other faiths.
Everyone “knows” that Muslims don’t unequivocally denounce terrorism, that American Muslim leaders have not responded to radicalization in their community, that mosques are the source of radicalization, that 85% of mosques are run by radicals, that Muslims don’t cooperate with law enforcement.
Everyone “knows” that Muslims are not equivalent to real Americans, that they are the enemy within, and a fifth column, that good Muslims can’t be good Americans, that Muslims are not loyal to America, that they are not a part of our American heritage,
Everyone “knows” that Islam itself is the problem and makes Muslims “backward”, that Muslims have made no contribution to the West, that Islam is “of the devil”, a Crescent menace, a “green peril”, that was spread by the sword, an “evil encroaching on the United States”, and not a religion.
Everyone “knows” that this is a Christian nation, which the Muslims are trying to take over, starting with getting an Eid stamp which is the first step towards shariah law which is a threat to America, and a threat to our judicial system, by purposefully having more children than others to increase their numbers, and they will be the majority in this country in 20 years. Muslims are a threat to America
Everyone “knows” that the Muslims’ goal is world domination under a Caliphate, and the proposed Cordoba House in NYC is a demonstration of supremacism and triumphalism, and that Muslims planned to open it on the anniversary of 9/11.
Everyone “knows” that Islam is a monolith and all Muslims are the same, like the “Borg”. This means that every act committed by an individual who is a Muslim is directly attributable to Islam, and never because the individual is crazy, criminal, or perverted.
The problem is that what “everyone knows” is wrong. These self-righteous and incorrect statements are usually followed by a demand that the Muslim community do something about whatever is the false flag of the day or face the inevitable consequences.
Islamophobes falsely claim to see “JIHAD” PLOTS everywhere, particularly where they don’t exist. They, like Muslim extremists, don’t understand the true meaning of the term jihad. The Islamophobes have uncovered countless examples of “shocking”, non-existent Muslim jihad plots.
Islamophobes generalize specific incidents to reflect on all Muslims or all of Islam. Islamophobes consistently push demonstrably false memes such as: - we are in danger from creeping Sharia, - the Muslim population is increasing at an alarming rate, - 80% of American Mosques are radicalized, - There have been 270 million victims of “jihad” - There have been 17,000+ “Islamic terrorist” attacks since 9/11 - Muslims in government are accused of being Muslim Brotherhood plants, stealth jihadists, and creeping Sharia proponents and should be MARGINALIZED or excluded. Muslim and Arab organizations and individuals are connected to the infamous Muslim Brotherhood document or the unindicted co-conspirator label, or accused of not condemning Hamas, telling American Muslims not to talk to the FBI, of being “Jew haters”, etc.
There is a reason that many, even outside of the Muslim community see such demonization of Muslims as Islamophobic. There is a reason that the ADL has stated that Brigitte Gabriel’s Act for America, Pamela Geller & Robert Spencer’s Stop the Islamization of America (SIOA), David Yerushalmi’s Society of Americans for National Existence (SANE) are “groups that promote an extreme anti-Muslim agenda”. There is a reason that The Southern Poverty Law Center has designated SIOA as a hate group, and that these individuals are featured in the SPLC reports Jihad Against Islam and The Anti-Muslim Inner Circle. There is a reason that these individuals and organizations are featured prominently in: — the Center for American Progress reports “Fear Inc.” on the Islamophobia network in America and Understanding Sharia Law: Conservatives skewed interpretation needs debunking. — the People for the American Way Right Wing Playbook on Anti-Muslim Extremism. — the NYCLU report Religious Freedom Under Attack: The Rise of Anti-Mosque Activities in New York State. — the Political Research Associates report Manufacturing the Muslim menace: Private firms, public servants, and the threat to rights and security. — The ACLU report Nothing to Fear: Debunking the Mythical “Sharia Threat” to Our Judicial System — in The American Muslim TAM Who’s Who of the Anti-Muslim/Anti-Arab/Islamophobia Industry. There is a reason that the SIOA’s trademark patent was denied by the U.S. government due to its anti-Muslim nature. There is a reason that these individuals and organizations are featured in just about every legitimate report on Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred.
