Pamela Geller Discovers Muslim Thanksgiving Turkey Plot

Pamela Geller is now on the warpath against Thanksgiving turkey jihad.  The fact that Butterball may have halal turkeys is a real problem for her.  In fact, the lede to the article on her site calls this possibility “an outrage” which she will fight, and includes a call for a boycott of the company.

Her only proof that all Butterball turkeys are halal is that one of her readers told her that she had written to Butterball and received a response - A citizen activist and reader of my website AtlasShrugs.com wrote to Butterball, one of the most popular producers of Thanksgiving turkeys in the United States, asking them if their turkeys were halal. Wendy Howze, a Butterball Consumer Response Representative, responded: “Our whole turkeys are certified halal.” 

I checked out the Butterball website and could find nothing about halal turkeys.  I have never received any notices from any of the Muslim listserves that I am on that halal turkeys were available from Butterball.  I have looked at the Butterball (and all the other brands) in my local supermarket, and none of them are marked “halal” or “kosher”.  I googled “Butterball halal turkeys” and found nothing except for Geller’s article and reprints of or referrals to her article on sites such as “Death to Islam”, “Bare Naked Islam”, “American Thinker” and other Islamophobic propoganda sites.  And, of course the other half of the dynamic duo, Robert Spencer has reprinted on his Jihad Watch site with the lede that Geller has revealed the “shocking truth” and closing with “this is a SIOA action alert”.  He asks readers to join the boycott and gives information so that they can write or call Butterball to complain.

So, if as Geller claims, all Butterball turkeys are halal (“If it’s a Butterball turkey, then it certainly is—whether you like it or not.”), then they are certainly doing a poor marketing job.  They are keeping this information secret from the very community who would be the purchasers of that product. 

In fact, this year I wasn’t certain that I would be able to find a halal turkey, and my family doesn’t ever want a repeat of the infamous “year of the tofu turkey”, and so have already gone to my backup plan and purchased a kosher turkey from Trader Joe’s.  So, if Geller is really worried about her freedom being undermined by the eating of a halal turkey, she is welcome to come and share a kosher turkey with us. 

According to Geller’s article

... Halal slaughter involves cutting the trachea, the esophagus, and the jugular vein, and letting the blood drain out while saying “Bismillah allahu akbar”—in the name of Allah the greatest. Many people refuse to eat it on religious grounds. Many Christians, Hindus or Sikhs and Jews find it offensive to eat meat slaughtered according to Islamic ritual (although observant Jews are less likely to be exposed to such meat, because they eat kosher).

...  Across this great country, on Thanksgiving tables nationwide, infidel Americans are unwittingly going to be serving halal turkeys to their families this Thursday. Turkeys that are halal certified—who wants that, especially on a day on which we are giving thanks to G-d for our freedom? I wouldn’t knowingly buy a halal turkey—would you? Halal turkey, slaughtered according to the rules of Islamic law, is just the opposite of what Thanksgiving represents: freedom and inclusiveness, neither of which are allowed for under that same Islamic law.

The same Islamic law that mandates that animals be cruelly slaughtered according to halal requirements also teaches hatred of and warfare against unbelievers, the oppression of women, the extinguishing of free speech, and much more that is inimical to our freedom. Actually, many Sikhs and most Hindus don’t eat any meat at all, no matter how it’s slaughtered.  And, if halal is cruel, then the same would be true of kosher.  If the method of slaughter is the problem then the objection logically would include both halal and kosher. 

In fact, the rules for Kosher and Halal slaughter are very similar.  Both slit the throat in one cut without cutting the spinal cord and the blood must be drained. Both must use a sharp knife with no nicks, and not sharpen it in front of the animal.  For kosher the animal must also be soaked in salted water to remove the last of the blood.  One difference is that Muslims must pronounce God’s name before slaughtering each animal, Jews must only pronounce a prayer before the first and last animals that are to be slaughtered at one time.  After the actual slaughter there are differences in which parts of the animal may be used, etc.  Kosher rules are more strict, and therefore observant Jews will not substitute halal for kosher, but many Muslims will substitute kosher for halal if halal is not available.

Geller is Jewish, and should be aware of this fact.  She should also be aware that fear-mongering about halal/kosher leads to problems for both Jews and Muslims.  For example, the Dutch have attempted to ban both Halal and Kosher slaughter.

Another “unintended consequence” of the anti-Sharia movement - San Francisco has a proposal to ban circumcision of male children on the November ballot. 

The JTA (a Jewish publication) notes that:

Although experts say it is highly unlikely the measure will pass—very few state propositions pass, much less one this controversial—the mere fact that it reached the ballot, and in such a major city, has caused much concern for Jews and their allies.

Opponents of the bill see it as a violation of the Constitution’s protection of religious rights and an infringement on physicians’ ability to practice medicine. More than that, however, the measure is being seen as a frontal attack on a central tenet of Judaism.

“The stakes are very high,” said Nathan Diament, director of the Orthodox Union’s Institute for Public Affairs. “Circumcision is a fundamental aspect of Jewish ritual practice and Jewish identity. While we certainly hope the prospect of its being enacted is remote, the precedent it would set and the message it would send would be terrible, not just in the United States but around the world.

...  The Jewish community responded immediately and loudly to the San Francisco ballot initiative, with denunciations from across the nation. The American Jewish Committee called it a “direct assault on Jewish religious practice” that was “unprecedented in American Jewish life.” The Orthodox Union said the measure is “likely illegal” and is “patently discriminatory against Jews and Muslims.”

That the anti-Sharia craze would also become an anti-Halakha issue was something that could be seen coming from the beginning.  Another article discusses two of these issues:

Two traditions that have been mainstays of Judaism are under attack in different parts of the world these days for the same reason: people who feel morally superior have decided that circumcision and Jewish dietary requirements for animal slaughter are cruel and inhumane.

...  Until such time as hunting and fishing are no longer acceptable sports; until such time as all 7 billion people on Earth agree to fulfill God’s ideal of humanity being exclusively nurtured on herbs, fruits and vegetables, governments should not be telling people of any religious tradition, let alone those who introduced God to humanity, how to fulfill the Divine Will.

So now, not only halal, but also kosher rules are coming under fire.

True to form, Geller ignores the truth.  She is so filled with hatred for Muslims that she is either unaware of or simply doesn’t care about the unintended consequences of her hateful and false speech.

This “stealth Sharia” attack on American freedom is ludicrous.  I’m just surprised that she doesn’t insist we call the bird something other than a turkey, which sounds suspiciously like a reference to that bastion of “Islamists” Turkey.  Perhaps we should call it “freedom poultry” to make certain that those tricky Muslims don’t slip anything by us.

The only point that Geller makes in all of this that is reasonable is that any company should label items that are halal or kosher, or whatever, so that people know what they are buying.  What is sad is that if a lack of labeling had been her concern and she had simply stated that food was being sold without being properly labeled, she might have also had the support of the Muslim community in an effort to ask the company to clearly label their products.

This is becoming an ongoing saga of hatred and stupidity.  Now Geller wants her followers to boycott Butterball for Christmas also. 

Jeffrey Goldberg has just published an article from a Jewish perspective on this issue of Kosher/Halal titled Pamela Geller Comes Out Against Kosher Laws.  He says

The method used to kill a bird according to halal requirements is also the method used to slaughter a bird according to the dictates of kashrut, or the kosher laws. Geller’s statement that “Jews are less likely to be exposed to such meat because they eat kosher” has to count as one of the most ridiculous things she has ever said. Jews who observe kashrut are eating birds whose tracheas have been cut. It’s as simple as that. Her desire to blame Islam for anything and everything she dislikes blinds her to the contradictions, fallacies and lies built into her arguments.    Unless, of course, Geller was actually making an indirect critique of kashrut. If Geller is suggesting that the kosher laws are inhumane (I know people who might beileve [sic] this is so) then she should come out and say it. If she wants to attack Judaism, then she should just do so in a direct manner.

Never able to let an opportunity to demonize Muslims pass, Geller’s fellow Islamophobes weighing in on this issue..

Joseph Farah published an article Time to limit Muslim immigration.  In this incredibly illogical article he states that unless Muslims are willing to repudiate Sharia they should not be allowed in the U.S. and that any adherence to Sharia is somehow a sign of disloyalty to the country and an inability to follow the Constitution.  According to Farah

But we need to do more than just require immigrants seeking entry to the U.S. as visitors or citizens to swear allegiance to our Constitution. We need to put the burden of proof on Muslims to demonstrate their desire to leave the world of Shariah behind them, to renounce its principles as well as to take a formal oath to uphold and affirm America’s national covenant. Furthermore, we need strict national quotas on immigration by Muslims – even those willing to renounce Shariah and swear an oath to the U.S. Constitution.

Why?  ...  Already, with only a few million Muslims living in America, they are having a disproportionate impact on our culture. Let me give you one example: There are still more Jews in America than Muslims, though the gap is narrowing quickly. Yet, Jews do not use their influence to ensure that Jews and non-Jews alike are forced to eat according to rabbinical kosher rules. However, it is increasingly difficult for non-Muslims in America today to buy a Thanksgiving turkey that has not been ritually sacrificed to Allah. Most of the meat sold in Costco is also halal.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to eat meat sacrificed to Allah. With Islam a tiny minority religion in the U.S., it seems perverse that people like me have to be careful not to eat food ritually sacrificed to this god of the few.  But this is the nature of Islam.

And Geller’s alter ego, Robert Spencer has just published an article so filled with hateful venom that I worry about his blood pressure.  A few tidbits

During Thanksgiving week, Americans were treated to a notable example of the effort by Muslims to assert Islamic law and practices over their American counterparts ...  American businesses kowtow to Islamic supremacist demands ...  This is how the stealth jihad advances.  ...  The Islamic supremacist agenda that I dubbed the “stealth jihad” in my 2008 book of that name is not a terrorist initiative, but a cultural one.  It centers upon the endeavor to bring Islamic law to the United States by nonviolent means, and to assert in every possible way the primacy of Islamic law and practice.

  He also throws in many other lies, but we’ll stick to just this one. 

No Muslims used their influence to force others to eat halal.  The only reason that any large meat packing companies produce kosher or halal products at all is to satisfy a demand from a segment of their consumers.  Within the U.S. the demand from the Jewish and Muslim communities is about equal as those populations are about the same.  However, in our global economy, big companies are not producing only for the U.S.  They are producing for a global market.  And, in that global market, there is a very big difference in the population numbers for the global Jewish and Muslim communities.  Many Muslims in Indonesia, or India, or anyplace else want to purchase halal meat, and American companies want to make a profit by selling their product to them.  It isn’t some devious case of “creeping Sharia”, just simple supply and demand economics.  If there is any company that has made a decision to slaughter all of the animals in their plant according to halal standards, then that is a business decision they have made and has nothing to do with any pressure from Muslims. 

Actually, many Muslims follow an interpretation that says there is no problem to eat meat slaughtered by people of the book (Jews and Christians) and buy their meat from the grocery store.  Exactly who are the “Islamic supremacists who have engaged in a “stealth jihad” to force any company to supply halal meat to Muslims and non-Muslims.  The only place they exist is in the fevered delusions of Islamophobes. 

All of this would be laughable if it wasn’t for the fact that there are people out there who take these lunatics seriously.  Here are just a few of the comments under Robert Spencer’s article

There is a reason that the ADL has stated that Brigitte Gabriel’s Act for America, Pamela Geller & Robert Spencer’s Stop the Islamization of America (SIOA), David Yerushalmi’s Society of Americans for National Existence (SANE)  are “groups that promote an extreme anti-Muslim agenda”.  There is a reason that The Southern Poverty Law Center has designated SIOA as a hate group, and that they published Jihad Against Islam and The Anti-Muslim Inner Circle by Robert Steinback in their Summer 2011 Intelligence Report.  There is a reason that Geller and Spencer are featured prominently in the Center for American Progress “Fear Inc.” report on the Islamophobia network in America.  There is a reason that Geller is featured in the People for the American Way Right Wing Playbook on Anti-Muslim Extremism.  There is a reason that Geller is featured in the NYCLU report Religious Freedom Under Attack:  The Rise of Anti-Mosque Activities in New York State.  There is a reason that Geller is featured in the Political Research Associates report Manufacturing the Muslim menace: Private firms, public servants, and the threat to rights and security.  There is a reason that Geller is featured in just about every legitimate report on Islamophobia and anti-Muslim hatred. 

This is the sort of hatred that these professional bigots stir up in their readership.  They must be proud!
