Islamophobia does have consequences

Since the terrible terrorist attack in Norway leading to so much human death and suffering took place only a few days ago, I have written a number of articles. The first about the initial speculation and refusal to accept responsibility for the fact that the speculation was wrong, the second responding to objections that I had referred to some of this speculation as Islamophobic, and the third discussing what we now know about the perpetrator based on his manifesto and video.

In his video and in the manifesto Breivik refers to being a Crusader, and suggests that he is part of a new group of Knights Templar. The video contains visuals of Crusader Knights and symbols. It is obvious that he sees himself as one of the leaders of a religious war. He calls himself a “Justiciar Knight Commander,” a leading member of a “re-founded” Knights Templar group which he says was founded at an April 2002 meeting in London. He claims that 9 individuals attended the founding meeting, but that there are three other members who couldn’t attend - for a total of 12 members of the leadership. This number of 12 also seems to be symbolic. Within the manifesto he says that there are between 15 and 80 “knights” like himself, and that each is a “solo martyr cell, completely unknown to our enemies and has a minimal chance of being exposed”. So, between 9 and 12 leaders of some sort, and 15 to 80 “knights” who are prepared to carry out such acts of terrorism. If true, this is a major concern for law enforcement. Symbolism seems to be very important to Breivik. Symbolism is everywhere in his writings and video - the date of this attack July 22nd was the date in 1099 during the first Crusade, that the Kingdom of Jerusalem was established - the 2083 year in the title of his manifesto refers to the 400th anniversary of the Battle of Vienna.
In reading the manifesto, I am struck by a similarity between this man’s seeming hope that he would be able to set off a war between Europe’s Christians and Muslims that would end in the expulsion of Muslims from Europe — and Charles Manson’s “helter-skelter” plot to start a race war in America. Manson wanted to change society by instigating a race war — Breivik wanted to change society by instigating a religious war. I am also struck by the similarity between Breivik’s manuscript and the infamous Muslim Brotherhood document.
There are many questions raised by this terrible event, and the background of this man. Among them is the question of whether or not any of the statements made by the far-right individuals and organizations that he admired and quoted could possibly bear any of the responsibility for the terrible actions of this man.
His writings show his admiration for the EDL, SIOE, Robert Spencer, the Jihad Watch regular poster “Fjordman” Atlas Shrugs [Pamela Geller], Bat Ye’or, Analekta [Informatics], Gates of Vienna, Geert Wilders, Walid Shoebat, The Brussels Journal, Ibn Warraq, The Religion of Peace, Brigitte Gabriel, Frank Gaffney, Andrew Bostom, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Bruce Bawer, Melanie Phillips, Mark Steyn, David Horowitz’ Front Page magazine, Steven Emerson, Daniel Pipes, Foundation For Defense Of Democracies (FDD) and the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), etc. A veritable , Who’s Who of the Islamophobia industry. He links 10 times to the Obsession video, refers to Robert Spencer or Jihad Watch 162 times, posted a 45-minute interview with Brigitte Gabriel. Mentions Bay Ye’or 59 times, Daniel Pipes 18 times, MEMRI 16 times, Pamela Geller and Atlas Shrugs 12 times, Frank Gaffnay and the Center for Security Policy 7 times, etc. Eli Clifton has published a chart that shows the frequency of citations to various individuals and organizations.
He seems to believe that he and these groups belong to something called the “Vienna School”, and in a post on 12/3/09, he said “I ran the business a few years while I studied and earned a few million so I could finance a inntektsløs politically active life. (Vienna school of thought) I now use these funds to be able to work full time to further develop / promote the Vienna Academy (Vienna school of thought) that Fjordman, Bat Yeor, Spencer + many others have already contributed so much till. The last three years I worked full time with a cultural conservative works that will help to further develop / promote these political doctrines further.” The SIOE is the European face of SIOA which was founded by Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer and has been designated as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, and said by the ADL to promote a conspiratiorial anti-Muslim agenda. His anger was not only directed at Muslim immigrants in Europe, but at the politicians and political parties that he thought had enabled that immigration, and at the idea of multi-culturalism which undermined a pure European culture.
His worldview developed over a number of years, and once developed, he began a very methodical process in which he carefully planned, not only his terrorist operation, but also how to gain the most media attention, and to control the story so that “his message” would gain the widest possible audience.
He wrote a 1,516 page manifesto. He prepared a video that summarized his manifesto. He had professional photographs taken of himself in various outfits (the mason, the military man, the middle class businessman, the modern “Knight Templar”, etc.) and in all of these he looks confident and calm. He even includes this series of photographs at the end of his manifesto to make them easily available.
And, then he waited until a few days before his attack to open a twitter account, and post one message, to open a facebook page and post some of his photographs and information. He waited until only hours before the attack to send out his manifesto and to post the video on YouTube. Islamophobia Today has a link to the video that still works here. I have now watched the full video since it was made available on IT, and it is basically a “martyr” video. He claims to have sent the text of the manifesto to 8,000 people “I spent thousands of hours doing this over a duration of more than six months (from two Facebook accounts) and I, alone, managed to send the compendium to more than 8,000 dedicated nationalists this way.”
He then carried out his well planned terrorist act, and gave himself up when the police cornered him. It seems from his writings that in his sick mind, the terrible attack itself was a strategy to get attention, so that he could then get out his “message” to the widest possible audience.
As people have an opportunity to read this entire manifesto, and to study the contents, not only does Breivik provide illumination of his personal worldview, but also provides insights into some of the ideas that helped to shape that worldview.
Many have noticed that entire passages have been copied out of the manifesto of Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber, and Breivik simply made small changes in the wording so that it fit his focus. For example when Kaczynski wrote about his “demon”, the leftists, Breivik changed leftists to “cultural Marxists” or “Multiculturalists” who are among his “demons”. He never mentions Kaczynski by name, but copies freely from Kaczynski’s writings.
In an article in the New York Times, Killings in Norway Spotlight Anti-Muslim Thought in U.S., Scott Shane notes that
... In the document he posted online, Anders Behring Breivik, who is accused of bombing government buildings and killing scores of young people at a Labor Party camp, showed that he had closely followed the acrimonious American debate over Islam.
His manifesto, which denounced Norwegian politicians as failing to defend the country from Islamic influence, quoted Robert Spencer, who operates the Jihad Watch Web site, 64 times, and cited other Western writers who shared his view that Muslim immigrants pose a grave danger to Western culture.
... By contrast, he quoted the American and European counterjihad writers by name, notably Mr. Spencer, author of 10 books, including “Islam Unveiled” and “The Truth About Muhammad.”
Mr. Breivik frequently cited another blog, Atlas Shrugs, and recommended the Gates of Vienna among Web sites.
Mark Sageman a former CIA officer and consultant on terrorism, said that it would be unfair to attribute Breivik’s violence to the writers who helped shape his world view. But at the same time, he said the counterjihad writers do argue that the fundamentalist Salafi branch of Islam “is the infrastructure from which al-Qaida emerged. Well, they and their writings are the infrastructure from which Breivik emerged.”
Frank Petalong wrote an article on Der Speigel which discusses at length, Breivik’s fascination with particular right wing movements primarily in Europe, but also in America. About Breivik’s fascination with Fjordman, he writes
Though it may have been without his consent, as Breivik’s most-quoted source, Fjordman is the most important co-author of the polemic.
The document by Breivik is no monograph or political-literary outpouring by a madman, who had clearly been planning a devastating attack for years. Instead it is a type of collage. The document “2083” comprises long sections of articles and essays found by Breivik in various “patriotic,” “national” and “conservative” publications and blogs. This makes Fjordman the actual author of several hundred pages in the convoluted bundle—in total some 38 chapters or subsections stem from his work. These sections fit in seamlessly with this “opus,” which calls on Europeans to engage in a bloody anti-jihad movement that goes as far as martyrdom.
The enemy, he makes it clear, are all those who are responsible for the Islamization of Europe—those who are not nationalists in the same vein as himself. In his words it sounds like this: “(...) it’s in your interest to help out your French, British, German, Scandinavian etc brothers to defeat the cultural Marxists/multiculturalists here in European metropolitans. Travel here yourself, transfer funds, give your moral support, become a martyr in the fight yourself—anything will be greatly appreciated.”
And that’s what Breivik did. On the island of Utøya alone he shot 68* young people who, according to his warped senses, embodied “cultural Marxists.” He invested years in planning these murders, and even more. In his “2083” scribblings he wrote: “Creating this compendium has personally cost me a total of €317,000 (...) All that, however, is barely noticeable compared to the sacrifices made in relation to the distribution of this book, the actual marketing operation.”
And what has Pamela Geller said about Fjordman? “The preeminent essayist, historian, and one of the leading lights of the counter jihad movement, Fjordman, has released his first book. Europe’s most reliable witness and modern historian has completed a compedium of analysis and data of the islamization of Europe.”
Roger Cohen in the New York Times writes
Breivik has many ideological fellow travelers on both sides of the Atlantic. Theirs is the poison in which he refined his murderous resentment. The enablers include Geert Wilders in the Netherlands, who compared the Koran to “Mein Kampf” on his way to 15.5 percent of the vote in the 2010 election; the surging Marine Le Pen in France, who uses Nazi analogies as she pours scorn on devout Muslims; far-rightist parties in Sweden and Denmark and Britain equating every problem with Muslim immigration; Republicans like former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Representative Peter King, who have found it politically opportune to target “creeping Shariah in the United States” at a time when the middle name of the president is Hussein; U.S. church pastors using their bully pulpits week after week to say America is a Christian nation under imminent threat from Islam.
Muslims over the past decade have not done enough to denounce those who deformed their religion in the name of jihadist murder. Will the European and U.S. anti-immigrant Islamophobic crowd now denounce what Breivik has done under their ideological banner? I doubt it. We’ll be hearing a lot about what a loner he was.
Toby Archer in a Foreign Policy article discusses at length the background of what the Islamophobes call the counter-jihad movement, and notes that
So when Anders Behring Breivik says that his killing spree on Friday, July 22, was “gruesome but necessary”—as he reportedly told his lawyer—we must not just dismiss him as mad, but ask why he thinks so. Having left a 1,500-page manifesto and a YouTube video—all conveniently in serviceable English for the international audience—he clearly wants to be understood.
To do so requires an appreciation of a transatlantic movement that often calls itself “the counter-jihad.” As his writings indicate, Breivik is clearly a product of this predominantly web-based community of anti-Muslim, anti-government, and anti-immigration bloggers, writers, and activists—no matter how much the movement’s leading lights may deny this and denounce his actions.
... The counter-jihad flirts with violent imagery, but I did not expect that anyone would commit a massacre on the scale of what Breivik has just done. Nor, I am sure, did most of the counter-jihadists. Still, the movement has some serious soul-searching to do. The numerous bloggers and activists of the counter-jihad may not call for direct violence, but they have painted a picture of a world where conflict with both immigrants and Europe’s supposed multicultural elite is inevitable. In that sense, they may not have given Breivik his orders, but they paved the road down which he chose to walk.
Those who have been mentioned or quoted in Breivik’s manifesto have been very quick to attempt to distance themselves from any possible responsibility. We are anti-Jihadists, we are opposed to terrorism, we have never told anyone to use violence or terrorism as a tactic against anyone.
That may be true, however, they have indulged in a discussion about Islam and Muslims that is characterized by extreme rhetoric.
The climate they have helped to create or reinforce is one of intolerance, fear, and resentment.
They have espoused and circulated memes such as: Muslims are more dangerous than others, their very religion is what causes them to be this way, they are liars and you can’t believe anything they say, there may be some good Muslims but it is almost impossible to tell which are the good ones, most are some sort of a fifth column just waiting their opportunity to “go Jihad” or impose Sharia, they don’t respect the Constitution, they want to undermine the foundations of Western civilization, they want to take away everything we hold dear and are just held back until they become a majority, and since they breed like rabbits this “demographic jihad” could happen sooner than people think, , minarets are a statement of supremecism, mosques are incubators of jihad, where there are mosques, there are Muslims, and where there are Muslims, there are problems, they have never made any original contributions to civilization, they will rape your daughters, and convert your sons, Islam is a death cult, Islam is evil, Islam is diametrically opposed to everything we believe in, Islam is not a religion, Islam is a disease, and Muslims are infecting our society with that disease, Europe is rapidly becoming Eurabia and America is next, unless we do something to stop them our civilization is doomed. There is no such thing as Islamophobia, as a phobia is an irrational fear, and fear of Islam is completely ratiional.
Here are a very few quotes from Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer, two of the most prolific spreaders of Islamophobia:
Geller: - Devout Muslims should be prohibited from military service, - Islam is a mental illness, - the only voices of reason in the Muslim world are lapsed Muslims or apostates, - the enemy has infiltrated every department, every division of the federal government and the Obama administration, including the White House, - Hitler was inspired by Islam, Arabic is not just another language like French or Italian, it is the spearhead of an ideological project that is deeply opposed to the United States, - There are no moderates. there are no extremists. Only Muslims.
Spencer: - Islam itself is an incomplete, misleading, and often downright false revelation which, in many ways, directly contradicts what God has revealed through the prophets of the Old Testament and through his Son Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh… For several reasons… Islam constitutes a threat to the world at large - no American official should be taking an oath on the Qur’an, since—as we have been pointing out here for over three years now—there are so many elements of traditional and mainstream Islam that are at variance with our system of government, our Constitution, and our entire way of life - there is no reliable way to distinguish a “moderate” Muslim who rejects the jihad ideology and Islamic supremacism from a “radical” Muslim who holds such ideas, even if he isn’t acting upon them at the moment - The misbegotten term “Islamo-fascism” is wholly redundant: Islam itself is a kind of fascism that achieves its full and proper form only when it assumes the powers of the state - I have written on numerous occasions that there is no distinction in the American Muslim community between peaceful Muslims and jihadists
And, just the day before the tragedy, David Horowitz’ Front Page Magazine published an article titled The Quislings of Norway by Joseph Klein, which included these passages During the Nazi occupation of Norway, nearly all Jews were either deported to death camps or fled to Sweden and beyond. Today, Norway is effectively under the occupation of anti-Semitic leftists and radical Muslims, and appears willing to help enable the destruction of the Jewish state of Israel. ... Norway is repeating its Quisling treachery of the Nazi era, this time in league with a growing radical Muslim population. And once again the Jews are the victims. ... “Part of the motivation for this anti-Semitism is the influx into Norway in recent decades of masses of Muslims from Pakistan, Iraq, Somalia and elsewhere. Multiculturalism has taught Norway’s cultural elite to take an uncritical, even obsequious, posture toward every aspect of Muslim culture and belief. When Muslim leaders rant against Israel and the Jews, the reflexive response of the multiculturalist elite is to join them in their rantings. This is called solidarity.”
This villification of Muslims, Arabs, and Islam has become relentless. Repeating the same things over and over again has been shown to create credibility. False logic seems plausible, and even outright lies repeated often enough begin to sound like the truth. Sadly, these stereotypes have replaced knowledge with ignorance and misperception, and ignorance fuels hatred of what we don’t know much about. Muslims are consistently portrayed as “the other”, not part of us, and imposible to understand, and so not worthy of tolerance. Just the mention of Islam creates a feeling of fear on the part of many non-Muslims because of what they have heard so often and causes them to believe that this fear is reasonable. There is a propaganda industry involved full time in a demonization of Islam and Muslims, and this lead to seeing Muslims as suspect and Islam as the source of every negative action.
If Muslims are so different from other human beings that there can never be any motive for any action they undertake other than Islam (no Muslim criminals, no insane Muslims, no political, economic, social, or cultural motives for actions), if you can’t tell a moderate from an extremist, and even the moderates are dangerous, then that really does seem to limit the options to either criminalizing Islam, interning and/or deporting Muslims, or carrying out a Crusade or “final solution” against the Muslims.
When this demonization has led to a situation where even politicians and elected representives can make anti-Muslim statements, and even suggest that Islam might not be deserving of the protection of the Constitution, or that Muslims should not have the same rights as other citizens, or that there should be a loyalty test for Muslims in government, that America is experiencing an Islamist cultural-political offensive designed to undermine and destroy our civilization, this simply legitimizes the Islamophobes claims. You see, even our elected representatives know that Muslims are the enemy.
Why does it come as a surprise to anyone that someone who really believed that everything they hold dear, their nation, their culture, their religion, their way of life were under attack from a group of people (Muslims) who are dangerous, devious, and relentless, would attempt to strike out in any way they saw as possibly saving themselves, their families, their culture, their nation. Breivik has already said that yes, he did commit this atrocity, but it wasn’t a crime because he had no choice if his country was to be saved.
This is the only direction that the arguments of the professional Islamophobes lead. For them to now claim that nothing they have said could have had any influence at all on the actual criminal actions of someone who took such ideas seriously is disingenuous, hypocritical, and a cowardly refusal to face up to any responsibility. Yes, a criminal is the only one ultimately responsible for violent actions, but there are certainly degrees of responsibility. And, to attempt to claim that words have no effect would mean that there is no such thing as propaganda, and that it is impossible for propaganda to have any effect.
Spencer says in response to allegations that he might have had some influence on Breivik: “There were no such messages. Nor is there, for any sane person, any inspiration for harming anyone in my work, which has been consistently dedicated to defending human rights for all people.” And, There is nothing Breivik could conceivably have read at JihadWatch.org or in any of my work anywhere as a justification for killing anyone.
Geller says in response to the same allegations: “If anyone incited him to violence, it was Islamic supremacists.” Geller also said “It’s like equating Charles Manson, who heard in the lyrics of Helter Skelter a calling for the Manson murders. It’s like blaming the Beatles.” Not exactly, Manson heard something that wasn’t there. What Breivik heard was pure anti-Muslim hatred and fear-mongering. Geller has also called the suggestion by some in the media that it is possible that the Islamophobic ranting of some might have had an influence on Breivik a “blood libel” “But the sharia-compliant media is naked in their blood libel to tie this murderer to everyone of us who fight for human rights, the rule of law, the dignity of the human person, free speech, the free conscience, and equality of rights for all.”
What exactly do they think individuals that they have convinced that they are in imminent danger of an “Islamic takeover” might do to defend themselves against the Muslim menace?
We have free speech in this country, and as long as they don’t break the law, these folks can say whatever they want. That doesn’t mean that we can’t speak out against what they are saying, or that we can’t identify their speech for what it is — hateful, bigoted, evil, dangerous, Islamophobia! In fact, we are not only free to counter hate speech, but it is a moral obligation to do so.
Whether it is extremist Muslims like Al Qaeda calling for a Jihad, or extremist Christians who want to bring on Armageddon (since they’ll be “raptured” they won’t have to suffer) and are calling for a Crusade, or extremist Jews who put Israel above Judaism. There are religious extremists everywhere who are using the internet and other modern means to get their message out more widely than ever before possible. Somehow we have tone down the hate rhetoric and find a way to live together in peace.
The ADL has issued a press release: Norwegian Terrorist Motivated By Growing Extremist Ideology In Europe And The U.S. which states
New York, NY, July 25, 2011 … The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) said the actions of a Norwegian terrorist whose views were apparently influenced, in part, by anti-Muslim voices in the U.S. are a reminder that hateful ideologies and lone-wolf terrorism remain a “serious and potent” threat.
“The attacks in Norway are a stark reminder of the broad range of violent terror threats faced around the world and in the United States,” said Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. “These attacks underscore the serious and potent threat of violence posed by a variety of dangerous extremists from across the ideological spectrum. This includes the ‘lone-wolf’ extremists, who have access to extremist ideologies on the Internet from around the world.”
The suspect in the July 22 attacks, Andrew Behring Breivik, published a 1,500-page manifesto quoting from the writings of European and American anti-Muslim writers, including Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller, who promote a conspiratorial anti-Muslim agenda under the pretext of fighting radical Islam.
According to ADL, Breivik’s views seem to be influenced by a coherent ideology present in growing numbers both in Europe and the United States, which views Islam as an existential threat to the world and sees leaders and governments as collaborators in allowing Islam to “infiltrate” the West.
“The suspected terrorist in the Norway bombing and shootings seems to have been motivated by anti-Islamic sentiments, but he did not attack Muslims. Rather, he reserved his extreme actions for those whom he thought were collaborating with Muslims and allowing them to take over Norway,” said Mr. Foxman. “Breivik was clearly influenced by an ideological movement both in the United States and Europe that is rousing public fear by consistently vilifying the Islamic faith. While the situation of Muslims in America—and how government and society deal with Muslim minorities and multicultural issues—is quite different and better in America, there are extremists here who think much like him and must be a matter of concern.”
The League has extensively reported on individuals who promote a conspiratorial anti-Muslim agenda in this country, including Spencer and Geller and their group, “Stop Islamization of America.”
According to ADL, Breivik’s focus on “left-wing” multiculturalists destroying white European culture in favor of minority cultures such as the Muslim community is common among the far-right and the groups that straddle the far-right and conservative worlds in the U.S. They blame the government, universities, and the media for promoting diversity and minority cultures over European or American culture and accuse them of undermining “Western civilization” or European-American values.
The League, which has strongly condemned the attacks in Norway and expressed deep sympathy for the Norwegian people, also warned against the rush to judgment that led some to blame Muslims for the attack before all of the facts were known to authorities.
“The rush to judgment that resulted in many initial accounts inaccurately blaming the attack on Islamic terrorists underscores the obligation to assess terrorist threats and acts without creating an atmosphere of blame and suspicion of the larger Muslim community,” said Mr. Foxman.
The Jewish Daily Forward reports that they received this comment by email from Abraham Foxman of the ADL: “Jews, Israelis and supporters of Israel must beware, must be careful, and cannot ignore or embrace those bigots who so much hate Muslims and Islam that they pretend to support Israel, Zionism and even Jews,’ Foxman said. “Likewise, those bigots and haters cannot immunize themselves by pretending to embrace Israel. We need to be very clear, as Jews and Israelis, that we separate ourselves from this kind of hatred, stereotyping and scapegoating. The Norway killer’s ramblings are a reminder that we must always be wary of those whose love for the Jewish people is born out of hatred of Muslims or Arabs.”
Abraham Foxman also posted an article Norwegian attacks stem from a new ideological hate on the Washington Post.
Svend White wrote an article on Tikkun discussing his surprise at such a clear statement by Foxman against Islamophobia (a surprise that I also experienced). White said:
I don’t often find myself agreeing with Mr. Foxman on issues involving Muslims—though I certainly share his concerns about the use of anti-Semitism as a political tool by Muslim extremists—but I think he is to be applauded for this principled and thoughtful warning about the growing threat of Islamophobia. Most interestingly, Foxman explitly explores the profound parallels between this new hate and the age-old “Socialism of Fools” that the ADL exists to fight. It is especially heartening to see one of the most prominent fighters against anti-Semitism call out hate-spewing Islamophobes for what they are, an in language that makes their deep affinities with traditional anti-Semites crystal clear. Foxman writes of hardline Islamophobia: These ideas are no longer geographically isolated. The Oslo perpetrator in his manifesto quoted extensively from the writings of European and American bloggers — including Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller — who promote a conspiratorial anti-Muslim agenda under the pretext of fighting radical Islam. Because of the reach of the Internet, these ideas float freely across borders and are reinforced by like-minded bigots. Likewise, he laments elsewhere the “promotion by anti-Islamic zealots of a growing conspiracy theory about ‘creeping Sharia law.’” It will be interesting to see whether Islamophobe bloggers dare to smear Mr. Foxman as a “dhimmi” sellout, as is their wont when dealing with experts whose work calls into question their Manichean conspiracy theories and distortions of Islamic belief.
We can only pray that this terrible tragedy might result in some soul searching and mutual interfaith efforts to bring healing and cooperation. Perhaps Abraham Foxman’s statements, and Herman Cains apology this week for anti-Muslim statements he had made are the beginning of such healing.
As to the reaction of the Islamophobes to these developments, it is likely that they will continue such smears.
