A Constitutional Amendment to Ban Islam?

A site called Pedestrian Infidel has posted a proposal for a Constitutional Amendment to ban Islam that would b e simply the laughable paranoia of a lunatic fringe group - except for the fact tha some mainstream folks with political influence have made comments that are just as alarming.

Here are just a few recent examples:

Peter Boyles of 630 KHOW-AM in Denver, told a caller on his May 30 show that “the enemy” is “radical, crazy, religious Islam.” Boyles also agreed with the caller’s suggestions that the United States should bar “Islamic immigration” and that Islam should be declared “a political ideology.” 2007

SANE (Society of Americans for National Existence) - released a policy paper that in part stated: “Whereas, adherence to Islam as a Muslim is prima facie evidence of an act in support of the overthrow of the US. Government through the abrogation, destruction, or violation of the US Constitution and the imposition of Shari’a on the American People. . .It shall be a felony punishable by 20 years in prison to knowingly act in furtherance of, or to support the, adherence to Islam.” 2007

On the July 2 edition of his nationally syndicated radio show, discussing the recent terror-related arrests in Britain, radio host Michael Savage said, “[W]hen I see a woman walking around with a burqa, I see a Nazi,” adding, “That’s what I see—how do you like that?—a hateful Nazi who would like to cut your throat and kill your children.” Savage also said that when a Muslim woman wears a burqa, “She’s doing it to spit in your face. She’s saying, ‘You white moron, you, I’m going to kill you if I can.’ “ 7/2/07 and [2] “I’m not gonna put my wife in a hijab. And I’m not gonna put my daughter in a burqa. And I’m not getting on my all-fours and praying to Mecca. And you could drop dead if you don’t like it. You can shove it up your pipe. I don’t wanna hear anymore about Islam. I don’t wanna hear one more word about Islam. Take your religion and shove it up your behind. I’m sick of you.” “What kind of religion is this? What kind of world are you living in when you let them in here with that throwback document in their hand, which is a book of hate. Don’t tell me I need reeducation. They need deportation. I don’t need reeducation. Deportation, not reeducation. You can take C-A-I-R and throw ‘em out of my country. I’d raise the American flag and I’d get out my trumpet if you did it. Without due process. You can take your due process and shove it.” “What sane nation that worships the U.S. constitution, which is the greatest document of freedom ever written, would bring in people who worship a book that tells them the exact opposite. Make no mistake about it, the Quran is not a document of freedom. The Quran is a document of slavery and chattel. It teaches you that you are a slave.” 2007

Richard DeVos, co-founder of Amway made remarks to Cornerstone University graduates comparing the “Muslim world” to Hitler’s global threat. 2007

Hugh Fitzgerald “Millions of Muslim migrants, now settled in Western Europe and even, to a thankfully much lesser degree, in North America. They give no signs of abandoning their loyalty to Islam and no signs of any permanent acceptance of the principles on which the Infidel nation-states in which they have been permitted to settle are built. They give no signs, en masse, of truly integrating into a world which, of course, since every political, intellectual and moral principle of that world is flatly contradicted by Islam, of course they would not. Only a handful, who essentially abandon Islam (even if they pretend they have not, often calling themselves “cultural Muslims” by which they mean little more than a fond memory of certain kinds of cooking), can be intelligently integrated into Western societies. The rest remain a permanent source of disruption, misinformation, threat, and of course potential menace.” 2007

Rev. Rod Parsley, a key McCain ally in Ohio, has called for eradicating the “false religion” of Islam. 2007

Mitt Romney - “ . . . based on the numbers of American Muslims [as a percentage of] our population, I cannot see that a Cabinet position would be justified. But of course, I would imagine that Muslims could serve at lower levels of my administration.” 2007

Christian Coalition founder and former presidential candidate Pat Robertson the election of Muslims like Rep. Keith Ellison and local officials in Houston pose a threat to America. “The curse of God is to bring in people who don’t share your point of view and then ultimately destroy your civilization,” Robertson said March 20 on his “700 Club” TV program. “Well, that’s what we’re facing for our children and grandchildren.” Robertson said Islam’s agenda is to “take over the government and that everybody else is a second-class citizen.” “That is the primary doctrine of Islam, and when Islamic people take over before long they want to institute Sharia, or the law according to the Quran, which has to do with cutting off the hands of thieves and stoning adulterous women to death and all the rest of it,” he said. 2007

Rev. Pat Robertson - On the June 12 edition of the Christian Broadcasting Network’s The 700 Club, following a report on Muslims in Minneapolis seeking religious accommodations at school and work, host Pat Robertson stated, “Ladies and gentlemen, we have to recognize that Islam is not a religion. It is a worldwide political movement meant on domination of the world. And it is meant to subjugate all people under Islamic law.” He characterized the American Muslim community as “Islam light” and went on to say Muslims “want to take over and we want to impose Sharia on you. And before long, ladies are going to be dressed in burqas and whatever garments they would put on them, and next thing you know, men are going to be allowed to have wife-beating and you’ll be beheading adulterers and so on and so forth.” 2007

David Clippard of the Southern Baptist Convention, opened the event by linking Baptist history with the church’s mission: to conquer evil. Islam, he said, is an evil encroaching on the United States. ... ”The real threat we are facing today is that Islam has a strategic plan to conquer and occupy America,” he said. ... “They have a plan to take over,” he said. ”The first city is Detroit which has 600,000 people. Three hundred thousand are Muslims today.” 2006

Bar Muslim immigration, deport Muslims, make the practice of Islam a felony, deny employment to Muslims, deny due process to Muslims, establish a religious test for public office, eradicate Islam - there is a theme here. It would seem that we need to pay some attention to what may be becoming another anti-Muslim meme.

As Bob Crane has so clearly pointed out: “We are engaged in mimetic warfare, which is the use of memes in the form of words or symbols, to capture the sub-conscious of others without them knowing that they have been hijacked. The first rule of warfare is to know your enemy. The second is to know his strategy. Only then can we know better the nature good and evil.”
