Associate professor at the American University’s School of International Service in International Peace and Conflict Resolution in Washington, DC, and Director of Peacebuilding and Development Institute. His research is on conflict resolution and dialogue for peace among Palestinians and Israelis, Islamic conflict resolution models; interfaith dialogue; and evaluation of conflict resolution programs. As a practitioner, he has been intervening and conducting conflict resolution training workshops in many conflict areas around the world, including: Palestine, Israel, Egypt, Philippines (Mindanao), Sri Lanka, U.S., and other areas. Abu-Nimer is the co-founder and co-editor of the new Journal of Peacebuilding and Development. His books include: Dialogue, Conflict Resolution and Change: The Case of Arabs and Jews in Israel (1999); Reconciliation, Coexistence, and Justice in Interethnic Conflicts (2001); Positive Approaches for Peace. (Eds.) Cynthia Sampson. Mohammed Abu-Nimer. Claudia Liebler. (Washington DC: PACT publications 2003); Peacebuilding and Nonviolence in Islamic Context: Theory and Practice (University of Florida press, 2003). 

Has received various awards and fellowships for scholarship and research, including
Outstanding Teaching Award in Full Time Appointment - American University (2002 –
03 academic year); Teaching Excellence Award – American Political Science
Association (2003); Visiting Fellowship – Joan B. Kroc Institute, Notre Dame
University (2002-3); Visiting Research Fellow- Harry Truman Research Institute for the
Advancement of Peace (1999- 2000)

As public speaker has appeared on numerous television news programs, radio shows, and has been interviewed for a multitude of newspaper articles on topics as diverse as U.S. Foreign Policy in Iraq, suicide bombings in Israel, the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, Islamic perspectives on peace and violence. These interviews have appeared on Al Arabia, Washington Post, MBC, World T.V. News Show, NPR, BBC World News, Arabic Radio (Israel), Christian Science Monitor, Al Itihad, and Voice of America.
