Muslims United at Hajj - Sunni-Shiah Dialogue in Chicago

Abdul Malik Mujahid

In less than three weeks, millions of Muslims from around the world
will be heading to a major demonstration of the oneness of humanity:
Hajj.

All dressed in one way, committing to One God, deciding not to hurt
even a small insect while they perform this fifth pillar of Islam,
these men and women will show that individuals can come together for a
higher cause despite myriad differences. As these millions from all
corners of the globe meet their Maker, they will cry out “Here I am, Oh
Lord, here I am,” from the blackest of the black to the whitest of the
white, as Malcolm X so beautifully described in his 1964 letter written
while performing his own pilgrimage.

These pilgrims will include both Shias and Sunnis, praying together,
standing next to each other around the same Kaba, drinking from the
same Zamzam water that nourished Prophet Abraham’s son. They will be
running in the memory of the same mother, Hajar, whose trust in God is
an example for all Muslims.

When the two largest groups of Muslims will be praying, they will be
praying for peace in the world and I’m sure they will be praying for
those more than a million people who have been killed since the first
Iraq invasion. They must also be wondering what they can do about Shias
and Sunnis killing each other.

While they are making dua at the most blessed place on earth, Muslims
in the US will be getting together on Monday December 25, 2006 in
Chicago for the continent’s first Shia-Sunni summit Insha Allah.
Alhamdu lillah, I have already received positive responses to the idea
and the event. Please attend this critical conference. If you are Sunni
Bring a Shia Muslim. If you are Shia, bring a Sunni. This is a dialog
to save lives. It is not about theological differences. It is about how
we can contribute to our safety and safety of our neighbors.
