The Anti-Muslim Congressional Mafia

by Sheila Musaji

THE CLAIM

Media Matters reports that “In Oct. 2009 Reps. John Shadegg (Ariz.), Paul Broun (Ga.), Trent Franks (Ariz.) and Sue Myrick (N.C.) — formally asked the House Sergeant at Arms to launch an investigation of the Center for American-Islamic Relations. They accused CAIR, a non profit group, of trying to infiltrate Capitol Hill with interns and staffers.  (They based their concerns on the Muslim Mafia book by Dave Gaubatz for which Rep. Myrick wrote a forward)  Gaubatz, sent his son Chris to grow a beard and go undercover as a Muslim to obtain an internship at the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

On Rep. Shgadegg’s website, he reports that a CAIR strategy memo was obtained from the authors of the book Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld that’s Conspiring to Islamize America, CAIR lays out plans to place interns in the Committees on the Judiciary, Intelligence, and Homeland Security for the purpose of influencing policy.  You can read the CAIR memo here.

THE REPRESENTATIVES MAKING THE CLAIM?

Rep. Myrick said regarding domestic security threats, “You know, and this can be misconstrued, but honest to goodness (husband) Ed and I for years, for 20 years, have been saying,‘You know, look at who runs all the convenience stores across the country.’ Every little town you go into, you know?”  “My point is people (who) don’t like us are all over the country, and we know that,” she said.”  Rep. Myrick launched a YouTube video series. In the first video, called Beyond Terrorism: The Whole Story, she warns that extremists live in our midst, “even in positions in our government.” But the wide-eyed Myrick tells the camera: “You’re not being told the whole story… This is something that nobody ever tells you.”  Rep. Myrick also supports Brigitte Gabriel’s Act for America.

Rep. Paul Broun (R-GA) introduced  H. Res. 1175 which “encourages citizens of all faiths and religious persuasions to reflect on the important impact that the Ten Commandments have had on the people and national character of the United States.”  Broun said about President Obama “We can’t be lulled into complacency.  You have to remember that Adolf Hitler was elected in a democratic Germany. I’m not comparing him to Adolf Hitler. What I’m saying is there is the potential.”

Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.) was reported to be considering filing a lawsuit for President Obama to prove his citizenship.

REAL REPRESENTATIVES DENOUNCE THIS CLAIM

These four obviously are only “representatives” for some Americans.  And, thankfully their point of view is not shared by everyone.

Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D-Calif.) said she was “appalled” by this situation.  “I urge the rest of my colleagues to join me in denouncing this witch hunt, which is clearly intended to create fear and distrust in our Capitol Hill community,” Sanchez said in a statement.”

Rep. Mike Honda (D-Calif.), the chairman of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, released the following statement

“At the heart of this issue is whether or not diverse populations are given a fair shot at representing their legitimate political interests in Congress, either as interns, as staff or as Members.  The climate in Congress is clearly not as conducive as it should be in encouraging democratic representation, as exemplified by recent fear-rousing antics.  As a result of the innumerous obstacles facing Muslim-Americans in this post-9/11 environment, their political participation is stifled and often stymied.  More channels for Muslim participation are sorely needed, as well as a friendlier climate that embraces, not discourages, diversity.  These fallacious allegations implicate the existence of a society still struggling with anti-Muslim sentiment.  My Muslim colleagues in the House of Representatives, along with the highly qualified, patriotic and committed Muslim staffers and interns that have worked with my office and with CAPAC, contribute mightily to our democratic process. Any slander against these fellow patriots is slander against democracy and religious freedom.”

The Congressional Tri-Caucus, which represents three minority caucuses, denounced a call by four GOP lawmakers for an investigation into whether Muslim “intern spies” have infiltrated the Hill.  “These charges smack of an America of sixty years ago where lists of ‘un-American’ agitators were identified,” said Reps. Michael Honda (D-CA), Barbara Lee (D-CA), and Nydia Velazquez (D-NY). They are the chairs of the Asian Pacific American Caucus, the Black Caucus, and the Hispanic Caucus, respectively.

THE SOURCE OF THE “EVIDENCE” FOR THE CLAIM

Dave Gaubatz, the author of Muslim Mafia said Obama is “our Muslim leader.” In a June 5 blog post, Gaubatz wrote: “What our Muslim leader Obama may not have calculated: Our country will not allow Israel or America to be destroyed by Islamic terrorists and their Obama supporters. Americans will stand up this time and help our friends. We will not sit down as in 1942 and allow our friends to be massacred.” [DG Counter-terrorism Publishing, 6/5/09]

Gaubatz wrote on his blog: “Only Islamic terrorists, their supporters, and very naive news media use the word ‘Muslim World’ (Ummah). Unless I am mistaken there is only one ‘World’ with humans, and Americans have yet to give our little slice of land to the Muslims, although Barack Hussain Obama is doing his damnest to do so. Hussain has forgotten America does not belong to him or his Muslim family. America belongs to Americans and Israel belongs to the Israelis.” [DG Counter-terrorism Publishing, 6/4/09]

Gaubatz called Islam a “terminal disease that once spread is hard to destroy.”

Gaubatz said that “a vote for Hussein Obama is a vote for Sharia Law.”

Gaubatz said in an interview in which he attempted to link CAIR with the Fort Hood Shootings “Expect more. Israel has endured ‘suicide/attacks’ similar to this for many years. Malik Nabal (sic) Hasan is a terrorist supporting the ideology of Al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah, and yes, CAIR. In Palestine, the leaders send out the young and vulnerable to carry out the murders in the name of Islam. The same is happening in America.”

As Glenn Greenwald notes, Gaubatz may not be entirely reliable as a source for anything:

“Gaubatz—a civilian agent who worked for The U.S. Air Force’s Office of Special Investigations—was also the source for the “bombshell story” from supreme Muslim-hater Melanie Phillips, who wrote a 2007 piece for the British Spectator with this screaming headline, immediately promoted by leading right-wing blogs:  “I found Saddam’s WMD Bunker!”  It details how Gaubatz personally found bunkers where Saddam’s WMDs were kept in Iraq, but “the [Bush] administration failed to act on his information, ‘lost’ his classified reports and is now doing everything it can to prevent disclosure of the terrible fact that, through its own incompetence, it allowed Saddam’s WMD to end up in the hands of the very terrorist states against whom it is so controversially at war.”  As a result, Saddam’s WMD are now in the hands of Syria, and the world has been fooled into believing that he had none.” ...  This is the ranting, insane hatemonger who House Republicans are now using as their expert source to demand an investigation into CAIR’s villainous plot to place interns on Congressional committees.  It would be darkly humorous if it weren’t so ugly and dangerous.  These House members highlight CAIR’s status as an unindicted co-conspirator in a Muslim charity case without noting that one of the most powerful groups in Congress has actually been directly involved in an espionage case against the U.S. , while numerous other corporations which receive substantial largesse from Congress have been convicted of all sorts of serious wrongdoing.”

Gaubatz is a former employee of the racist group Society of Americans for National Existence (SANE). On its now members-only website, SANE offered a policy proposal that would make it illegal to be a Muslim: “Whereas, adherence to Islam as a Muslim is prima facie evidence of an act in support of the overthrow of the US. [sic] Government through the abrogation, destruction, or violation of the US Constitution and the imposition of Shari’a on the American People…It shall be a felony punishable by 20 years in prison to knowingly act in furtherance of, or to support the, adherence to Islam.”  SANE’s Immigration proposal calls for a ban on Muslim immigration and declaring all non-US citizen Muslims Alien Enemies and deported.  SANE founder David Yerusalmi issued a paper titled “War Manifesto – The War Against Islam” suggesting that all practicing Muslims, irrespective of their declarations to the contrary, should not be allowed to immigrate to this country.  You can read more about SANE here

David, Yarushalmi, the President of SANE said  “On the so-called Global War on Terrorism, GWOT, we have been quite clear along with a few other resolute souls. This should be a WAR AGAINST ISLAM and all Muslim faithful…At a practical level, this means that Shari’a and Islamic law are immediately outlawed. Any Moslem in America who adopts historical and traditional Shari’a will be subject to deportation. Mosques which adhere to Islamic law will be shut down permanently. No self-described or practicing Muslim, irrespective of his or her declarations to the contrary, will be allowed to immigrate to this country…”  He also said “Muslim civilization is at war with Judeo-Christian civilization…The Muslim peoples, those committed to Islam as we know it today, are our enemies.”  And, “Instead of a promise of victory, Sura 24:52 must be made ashes in the mouths of Muslims. A seemingly unending air control campaign over enemy territory is the way to continually remind the Muslims of their subordinate status and the impotence of Allah without becoming mired in the quagmire of counterinsurgency.”  Yarushalmi was also a leader of the Stop the Madrassa group that hounded Debbie Almontaser and the Khalil Gibran School.

Dave Gaubatz in a posting on the Family Security Matters site wrote  “Politicians, Muslims, and law enforcement are concerned about a ‘backlash’ against Muslims. Now is the time for a professional and legal backlash against the Muslim community and their leaders.”

Gaubatz previously pretended to be a Muslim and went into a mosque in Virginia and then made all sorts of questionable claims.

Paul Sperry, the co-author of Muslim Mafia spoke at Brigitte Gabriel’s Act for America Conference.  He wrote another book Infiltration: How Muslim Spies and Subversives have Penetrated Washington.  A sympathetic site discussing a talk by Sperry about this book says that “Paul Sperry argued that Islamic extremists are using the media, government, and U.S. citizens to turn America into an Islamic state.  The author explained that Muslim businessmen and scholars who appear to be patriotic are taking advantage of the American way of life to further their agenda of destroying America’s constitutional government. Mr. Sperry cited examples of prevalent and systemic anti-American activity by large parts of the Muslim community and the subversive activities of specific individuals. He also cited security and intelligence activities compromised by Muslim employees. He responded to questions from members of the audience.”

Brigitte Gabriel of Act for America has said “If a Muslim who has—who is—a practicing Muslim who believes the word of the Koran to be the word of Allah, who abides by Islam, who goes to mosque and prays every Friday, who prays five times a day—this practicing Muslim, who believes in the teachings of the Koran, cannot be a loyal citizen to the United States of America.”  Brigitte Gabriel has also stated: “America and the West are doomed to failure in this war unless they stand up and identify the real enemy: Islam.”

Robert Spencer wrote  “One may hope this heralds the end of the influence of this unsavory and thuggish group.” (referring to CAIR)

COUNTERING THIS PROPAGANDA

The Progressive Pulse pointed out “But Myrick is not only concerned about spies planted by the Council on American-Islamic Relations, she is also asking for an investigation into the group’s tax status. She tells Fox:  “They are a 501(c)3 but very frankly throughout this memo and other materials that are in the book Muslim Mafia they do say they lobby. So we’re asking the IRS to look into their 501(c)3 status because you’re not supposed to lobby under that particular designation.”  Except you are allowed to lobby under that particular designation. You have to abide by some stricter regulations — lobbying expenses can’t exceed 20 percent of your total budget — but lobbying is allowed.  So is Myrick investigating every 501(c)3 that lobbies? Somehow I doubt it.”

The NYU Local summed this up pretty well “So to summarize: fringe crazies are so distrustful of any sort of exercise of political influence by American Muslims that they “infiltrate” a non-profit advocacy group by sending in one lone intern. Then they find a memo that outlines some pretty non-controversial ways of making sure Muslim-American interests are represented in government, and distort the language to imply that CAIR is planning on doing exactly what they just did to CAIR.  Then some of the fringe crazies in Congress pounced on this, and now we’re dealing with an amateur House of Un-American Activities. Awesome.  How long do you figure until Michelle Bachmann gets involved?”

Politics Daily noted “It’s sort of a mainstream advocacy group strategy, it’s not really a new strategy, it’s not a nefarious one unless of course you happen to pursue that strategy while being Muslim,” MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow said Thursday night of CAIR’s goal to place Muslim interns on Capitol Hill. Politico called the memo’s contents “a fairly straightforward public relations and lobbying strategy” and referred to the representatives’ group announcement as “unusual.”

William E. Jackson, Jr.  points out “If Myrick has any details about a legitimate threat to national security from radical Muslims infiltrating the federal government, she could go to the FBI. Alternatively, she could follow in the footsteps of the deceased Sen. Joe McCarthy (R-Wisc.)—another fear monger—and name names and provide numbers of terrorists who lurk inside our governmental institutions. But, of course, “I can’t tell you”—says this new member of the House Intelligence Committee—because it is secret information.”  Another site noted “Today, Myrick says her relatively new position on the House Intelligence Committee has made her privy to top-secret intelligence reports that reveal a huge, immediate threat from homegrown Islamic jihadists—something that makes her want to yell, “Wake up, America!” That’s great, but there’s one more glaring fact that stands out: Other, more senior members of the Intelligence Committee have seen the same documents Myrick saw, and you don’t see them getting all bug-eyed and trying to scare the daylights out of the public.”

Dean Obeidallah put together a video after these claims were made about which he said “In an effort to speed up the Muslim take over of America—which on some level would probably help my comedy career because I’ll get even more bookings by Muslim groups—my fellow Arab-American comedians Aron Kader and Maysoon Zayid went out to the streets of NYC with me to see if we could recruit Americans to Islam. (We did this a little while back when we first heard this allegation.) We offered prizes to people to convert to Islam, such as a toaster, a blender and even Sudoku. Here is a clip of our efforts to convert Americans!” You can watch the video here.

Hussein Ibish has pointed out in a review of the book:  “But really, it is extraordinary that six months of “infiltration and undercover work” in the “belly of the beast” involving the theft of a small mountain of documents would have uncovered precisely… nothing! Or at least nothing that wasn’t already common knowledge among those who follow these things to any extent whatsoever. It’s extremely interesting in that what this really suggests, in fact, is that there isn’t anything left to be discovered. If all of this effort produced nothing but a regurgitation of well-known complaints and issues regarding CAIR, whether any of them are well-founded or not, what this strongly implies that there isn’t anything more to be learned. Not only did these people waste their time, apparently they have demonstrated that the long-standing concerns about the organization, and especially its prehistory, that have been circulating in Washington for many, many years is about all there is to it.”

UNINDICTED CO-CONSPIRATOR?

All of these anti-Muslim folks raise the “unindicted co-conspirator” charge against CAIR.  What does it mean?

“CAIR Was Listed As An Unindicted Co-Conspirator In The Holy Land Foundation Case. The New York Times reported that in the Holy Land Foundation terrorism financing case, CAIR, along with 300 other individuals and groups, was listed as an unindicted co-conspirator: “Technically, the prosecution can introduce statements made by any individual or organization named as an unindicted co-conspirator without such statements being dismissed as hearsay. Those on the list have not been charged with anything, but they are concerned that the label of unindicted co-conspirator will forever taint them, particularly if the Holy Land group is convicted, and that they will have no legal recourse.” [New York Times, 08/16/07]

Department Of Justice Advises Against Identifying Unindicted Co-Conspirators. The DOJ’s Criminal Resource Manual notes: “In the absence of some significant justification, federal prosecutors generally should not identify unindicted co-conspirators in conspiracy indictments.” [DOJ.gov, Criminal Resource Manual, accessed 10/15/09

“Civil Rights Groups Have Called For CAIR To Be Removed From List.  The American Civil Liberties Union argued that CAIR’s inclusion on the list falsely tarnished the group’s name: “‘What we’d really like to see is a decision before the trial starts in order to have that stigma removed, before all these issues are prominent again,’ said Hina Shamsi, one of the ACLU attorneys who filed Wednesday’s request.” [The Dallas Morning News, 6/19/08

What does term mean?  Here is one definition:  “The prosecutor is saying in essence in court—and they haven’t said it yet by the way—but they apparently will—that we believe this man was part of the criminal conspiracy, along with the people who are on trial. We haven’t indicted him but the relevance of that for the purposes of the trial is that lets them get in more evidence about the unindicted co-conspirator’s or the alleged unindicted co-conspirator’s out-of-court statements than they otherwise could. It’s a way around the hearsay rule. ... For example, if they want to—somebody, one of their witnesses, to talk about what Bruce Lindsey said to him, ordinarily that would be barred by the so-called hearsay rule. You can’t talk—you can’t testify in a trial about what somebody else said out of court. That rule has a lot of exceptions. One of the exceptions is if the person who you’re trying to quote, here Bruce Lindsey, is named by the prosecution as an unindicted co-conspirator, then you can talk about what he said out of court.”

Rep. John Murtha was an unindicted co-conspirator in the FBI sting operation Abscam.  A federal prosecutor identified former state economic development commissioner Bill Baxter as an “unindicted co-conspirator” in state Sen. Jerry Cooper’s land fraud case, and the judge at Cooper’s trial agreed.  Erwin Roberts (R) (who challenged U.S. Rep. John Yarmuth (D)) was the Personnel Secretary during the Fletcher Administration’s hiring scandal and Roberts was named an unindicted co-conspirator during that investigation.  Former Senate Majority Leader Jerry Mackie has been named an “unindicted co-conspirator” in the federal corruption investigation in Alaska.  Senator Jerry Cooper was named an unindicted co-conspirator in a land deal that benefitted him personally.  A generation ago Watergate prosecutors used the term unindicted co-conspirator to describe President Richard M. Nixon in a criminal trial of his aides. The phrase resurfaced in a Whitewater-related trial when prosecutors listed President Clinton’s closest adviser, Bruce Lindsey, as an unindicted co-conspirator in a case against two bankers.  And, in the AIPAC spy case lot’s of folks were indicted.

WHAT “EVERYONE KNOWS” ABOUT ISLAM IS WRONG

This anti-Muslim mafia is simply repeating the many claims that have been made about Islam and Muslims and using the fact that a majority of Americans don’t know much about Islam in order to make some political capital.  That is reprehensible.

The most commonly repeated claims about Muslims are that “everyone knows” that most or all terrorists are Muslims, and there are no Christian and no Jewish terrorists (or terrorists of any other religious stripe), and that Muslims are inherently violent.  Everyone also knows that Muslims are not equivalent to real Americans, that they are the enemy within, and a fifth column,  that good Muslims can’t be good Americans, that they are not a part of our American heritage, that they are all militant,  that Islam makes Muslims “backward”, that Muslims have made no contribution to the West,  that Islam is “of the devil”, a Crescent menace, and an “evil encroaching on the United States”, and not a religion.  Everyone knows that this is a Christian nation, which everyone knows the Muslims are trying to take over, starting with getting an Eid stamp which is the first step towards shariah law, and by purposefully having more children than others to increase their numbers.  Everyone knows that Muslims have no respect for the Constitution.  Everyone knows that Muslims are given a pass by the elite media.  It’s “us versus them”.  They don’t speak out against extremism or terrorism, and even those Muslims who do speak up or seem moderate are simply lying or practicing taqiyyah.  The problem is that what “everyone knows” is wrong.  These self-righteous and incorrect statements are usually followed by a demand that the Muslim community do something about whatever is the false flag of the day or face the inevitable consequences.

In addition to these “everyone knows” statements of demonization and misrepresentation, there is also a whole industry of simply connecting with Islam or Muslims with any negative idea, event, or societal trend (even when there is no sane connection to make).  These I think of as “Through the Looking Glass” claims.  For example, lots of “news” items never happened, or are simply not true.

Arabs didn’t celebrate 9/11 at a Dunkin Donuts in New Jersey.  Budweiser did not pull all its product from the shelves of a convenience store where there was celebration of the terrorist attacks - this never happened.  The Muslim statement of faith (Shahada) is not an expression of hate.  An American Missionary in Africa didn’t face possible murder charges and hanging because of a traffic accident.  There is no verse of the Qur’an on “The Wrath of the Eagle”.  The supposed bomb threat made by an Arizona student that led to an evacuation of the school was a hoax by non-Muslim students.  The story that Iran was considering forcing Jews to wear a yellow star appeared in several publications and it was totally false.  The slaying of the New Jersey Coptic family was falsely charged to Muslims.  The story about the British banks banning piggy banks so as not to offend Muslims never happened.  Muslims are not more likely to support terrorism and violence than Christians or Jews.  Muslims did not destroy the Library of Alexandria.  Nurses in Britain were not “ordered to drop everything and turn Muslims’ beds toward Mecca five times daily”.  There is no  Muslim sword through the 41-cents mark on the U.S. Eid stamp.  Sirhan Sirhan is a Christian, not a Muslim.  The Virginia Tech massacre had no connection with Islam.  A bus driver in Britain didn’t tell passengers to get off the bus so he could pray.  Rachel Ray’s Paisley scarf is not a symbol of “murderous Palestinian Jihad” (and neither is a Keffiyah).  A Muslim student in Florida did not refuse to stand for the pledge of allegiance.  There were no Muslims acting suspiciously on Air Tran flight 297. Wearing a tee-shirt with Arabic writing on it does not make a person dangerous.  A Madrassah is simply a school.  The zebibah (prayer bruise) on some Muslims foreheads is not a sign of a “commitment to jihad”.  Jihad is not terrorism. Ashura is not a “Muslim blood festival”.  Muslims are not forbidden to have non-Muslims as friends.  The Nuclear Security Summit logo is an atom on a circular path, not an Islamic symbol, the U.S. Missile Defense Logo is not evidence of Obama’s ‘Submission To Shariah’, and neither is the Flight 93 memorial.  Barack Obama is not a Muslim, but so what if he was?  (Note: click on the links to see responses to particular claims or incidents

The fact that these “news stories” and articles are simply wrong doesn’t change the fact that they are “out there” and that they will be read and believed by many of the same folks who believe the supermarket tabloids.  They will be forwarded or passed on, and commented on, and the stories will grow and more and more people will accept them as “facts”.  I would hope that not only Muslims would be concerned with the dangers in this sort of stereotyping and dehumanizing of any segment of our population.  Here is a link to a collection of English translations of Nazi Propaganda: 1933-1945.  Exactly how is this different?

What is most frustrating is that each and every claim that is raised and answered will be raised again, and answers demanded again.  As a proud American, and a proud Muslim, I am becoming very frustrated that there is a request from someone in my mail each day asking for information to respond to some claim that seems to have more lives than a cat.
