ISNA Appeals Its Members to Pray for Nelson Mandela

As President Nelson Mandela has met his creator in South Africa, ISNA remembers his historical contribution as a fighter for freedom and human solidarity. President Mandela not only led his people to victory against apartheid but also inspired the whole humanity with his total commitment to reconciliation and forgiveness. He was well versed with the Quranic message and acted on it at a critical time in the history of mankind :

“The acts of goodness and evil cannot be equal. You should repel evil by that which is better. That way those who were hateful towards you will become your good partners and allies” (Quran 41:38)

ISNA applauds Mandela for his special qualities as a leader and a model of virtues of integrity and sincerity. We join the South African nation, Muslims of South Africa and the whole human family in fully identifying with his lifelong struggle and spirit of sacrifice, and we pray to Allah that his legacy will continue to emblazon the people of South Africa and the world.

We urge our brothers and sisters in American mosques to mention his contribution and remember him in their duas. The Muslim community in South Africa recalls his visit to the Awwal Mosque in the Bo-Kaap soon after his inauguration as the president to show his appreciation for the contribution that Muslims had made to the struggle during Apartheid.

“ISNA remembers with pride the rallies and programs we helped organize in the 80’s in solidarity with the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa and were joined by vast number of people of other faiths in America dedicated to the same cause. All of us were inspired by the iconic figure of our great brother and anti-apartheid leader Nelson Mandela”, said Sayyid M. Syeed, National Director of ISNA’s Office for Interfaith and Community Alliances.

President Mandela has left a rich legacy and we need to commemorate it for generations to come.
