Election of New Pope

by Sheila Musaji

The next Pope will face many new issues and challenges in a world that is very different than that in which Pope John Paul II took office.

Many of the 26 newest cardinals are known for Muslim ties and their involvement in outreach to Muslims, and many see Islam as an ally against unbelief.    Islamic Relations and fitting Islam into the Catholic worldview have become key Vatican topics.

Whether Islam and the Vatican will be rivals or partners may depend on the results of discussions on whether dialogue and interfaith efforts are necessary or productive.
