PLEMON TAUHEED EL-AMIN is the Masjid Imam of the Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam. He works closely as an aide and supporter of Imam W. Deen Mohammed and his Ministry, The Mosque Cares.

Imam El-Amin´s insightful and hands-on approach to leadership has helped develop the Atlanta Masjid into one of the largest and most progressive Muslim communities in the United States. Imam El-Amin is known for his interest and ability to build, restore, and salvage property as well as human lives that others have written off and given up on. He led the 1989-90 renovation and expansion of a dilapidated and condemned property in Southeast Atlanta, lifting it to a respected, beautiful, and highly visible Islamic Shopping Plaza with eight stores and the site of the 15,000 square-foot Atlanta Masjid. In 1996, he further catapulted the Atlanta Masjid community to purchase surrounding property with plans of building up the neighborhood others had abandoned. Under his leadership, the Mohammed School System that began in 1980 with 60 students and 8 staff members has grown to an enrollment of more than 300 students and 40 staff personnel. The school system continues to expand and progress with the opening of the 20,000 square foot gymnasium and educational facility, built from the ground up by the Atlanta Masjid Community under Imam El-Amin´s daily supervision.

He has traveled around the world accompanying Imam W. Deen Mohammed representing the concerns and interest of Muslims in the United States. Their travels have taken him to Palestine and Jerusalem where they were the guest of Palestinian President Yasir Arafat, the Sudan, Denmark, England, and Egypt. Imam El-Amin led a 1997 delegation of 35 progressive Muslim youth and young adults from the U.S., to meet and couNsel with leaders of Malaysia, as a study Tour for building international bridges. On three occasions, Imam El-Amin was a part of a select delegation of leaders that traveled with Imam W. Deen Mohammed to Saudi Arabia; twice on an educational mission, and again to assist the U.S. Military with religious orientation in the Gulf Crisis; each time performing the Umrah—the minor Hajj (pilgrimage) to Mecca in 1978. Recently, he traveled alone to Saudi Arabia´s Cultural Heritage Festival representing Imam Mohammed and as a guest of Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz.

Imam El-Amin´s concern for advancing communities is not limited to participation in the Muslim community. He serves on several interfaith, religious, and government councils, including the Georgia Human Relations Commission, the Interfaith Coalition of Atlanta, and the Religious Advisory Board of Emory University, just to name a few. He has led and organized community marches against crime and drugs and for stabilizing and strengthening families. He has received numerous awards and accolades for his works and leadership.

A native Atlantan and graduate of Harvard University, he converted to the religion of Al-Islam in 1974. He became Imam under the tutelage of Imam W. Deen Mohammed and Imam Ibrahim Pasha. He has lectured at hundreds of masajid, schools, colleges, churches, penal institutions, conferencs, forums and community gatherings. He is the father of two children - Fatima and Fareed.
