Professor Afzal Ahmed


Afzal Ahmed is Professor of Mathematics Education and Director of the Mathematics Centre at the University College Chichester. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and its Applications and an elected member of the International Commission for the Improvement of Mathematics Education. He has directed numerous research and development projects for government and non-governmental organisations in the UK and elsewhere, and is the editor of the International Journal of Teaching Mathematics and its Application. He has acted as a consultant for radio and television programmes, represented the UK government on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development committtees and other organisations and is frequently invited to advise Local Education Authorities as well as industrial organisations on issues concerned with raising mathematics achievement at school and higher education level and in its application in social and industrial contexts. He has been active in developing ways of communicating mathematics through art forms such as dance, music and visual arts. He has worked on a voluntary basis with Aga Khan Education Services (AKES) and the Institute of Educational Development (IED) and taken a lead on lifelong learning initiatives within the Ismaili communities in Europe.
