ADL expresses horror at the destruction of the Islamic Center of Joplin
St. Louis, August 6….The Anti-Defamation League, Missouri/Southern Illinois, today expressed horror at the destruction of the Islamic Center of Joplin, and urged federal and state law enforcement representatives to investigate the burning as a potential hate crime, if appropriate. This is the third attack on the Islamic Center of Joplin since 2008. Most recently, the Center was the target of an arsonist in early July; investigation into that vandalism was ongoing when the appalling destruction of the entire building occurred last night.
Karen Aroesty, ADL regional director stated, “The ADL stands in solidarity with the Joplin Islamic Community and Muslims all over the region as they experience yet another attack on a Muslim house of worship. As we wait expectantly for Fire Marshalls and law enforcement to determine the ultimate cause of this suspicious fire, we must address the unique persecution that Muslims in Joplin must feel”.
The Anti-Defamation League has addressed intensified violence against Mosques and Islamic Centers around the country in recent years. “It is difficult not to jump to the conclusion that hate, harassment or intimidation is involved,” added Aroesty, “and we commend both federal and state officials who are working quickly to bring the facts of the destruction to light.”
The Anti-Defamation League, founded in 1913, is the world’s leading organization fighting hate, bias and bigotry through advocacy and cutting-edge programs and services.
