ADC joins diversity effort in Netherlands

Washington - The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC) is participating in the Diversity Dialogues Conference, “Sharing Ideas, Building Bridges: A Dutch-U.S. Muslim Dialogue,” being held in the Netherlands from October 31- November 3.

The conference is being co-sponsored by the U.S. Embassy in the Netherlands and the Education Fund of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights (LCCR). ADC is part of the LCCR delegation and is being represented by Mary Rose Oakar, ADC President, and Kareem Shora, National Executive Director. ADC is an active organizational member of LCCR. Over 50 million Americans belong to the organizations that comprise LCCR.

The “Diversity Dialogues” project was conceived by U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands Roland Arnall to foster Dutch and U.S. relationships by building a full and more in-depth understanding between the Dutch and U.S. societies around a variety of issues related to diversity.

The conference is a people-to-people exchange with Dutch and U.S. Muslims focusing on identity, civic participation, media portrayal, youth development, women’s issues and economic opportunity. The format of the conference is highly interactive and participatory. The methodology is based on conversations facilitated through a series of structured small and large group sessions. The sessions are designed to build upon one another to deepen understanding of the topic areas as well as the interpersonal dynamics.

The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC), which is non- sectarian and non- partisan, is the largest Arab-American civil rights organization in the United States. It was founded in 1980, by former Senator James Abourezk to combat racial stereotyping and to protect the civil rights of people of Arab descent in the United States. ADC has 38 chapters nationwide, including chapters in every major city in the country, and members in all 50 states.
